    Some background:

The end of the road for Switzerland's vintage car graveyard By Tony Paterson in Berlin

It is the biggest graveyard of its kind in Europe – a vast metal jungle of more than 1,000 rusting vintage cars including forgotten British Wolseleys, "sit up and beg" Ford Prefects, rotting Porsches and even the wreck of a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.

The collection of decaying old-timers, which go back to the late-1920s, sits in makeshift corrugated iron garages and among trees on the edge of Kaufdorf some 10 miles south of Switzerland's capital Bern.

After surviving for 75 years, the authorities have declared that the collection is an environmental hazard and intend to clear it by court order later this year. But the plan has provoked uproar among concerned Kaufdorf locals and more than just a few other Swiss residents. A campaign to preserve the site was started last month when an open day was held. The organisers expected about 50 people to attend, but 10,000 turned up. Franz Messerli, whose father founded the car cemetery, said: "We never expected such interest. Our aim is to preserve it for posterity as a national work of art."

Mr Messerli's father, Walter, opened what was originally intended as a vehicle breaker's yard in 1933. A part-time racing driver and scrap-metal dealer, he was fascinated by cars and even taught himself to be a mechanic. At its peak, his collection numbered about 2,000 vehicles.

Messerli senior started collecting the more remarkable examples. "He wanted to open a museum which would cover the history of modern motoring," his son said. Franz Messerli, who took over the graveyard in 1975, said both he and his father had fought for years for the right to retain the site. In 1975 he bowed to local council demands and planted trees because of complaints it was an eyesore.

The site has attracted the attention of Swiss artists and academics who want to preserve the graveyard for posterity. There are plans for a formal "national historic car graveyard exhibition" this summer.

Barbara Richiger, a Kaufdorf resident, said the graveyard's only hope lay in its obtaining official recognition as a museum. "Swiss law defines vintage cars that can't move as rubbish which must be cleared away," she said. "We hope we can enlist the help of other Swiss museums to persuade the authorities to think differently in this case."

Here's a rough translation of the German from the website link, just for fun.

"Old timer gallery Toffen auctioneers autocemetery purchase village
Author: Uschi chain man • 17. July 2009

On 19 September 2009 the old timers gallery Toffen auctioneer the vehicles of the historical autocemetery Gürbetal in purchase village in a NO limit auction, thus without minimum price. The verbal promise of owner Franz Messerli is already there, explained Reinhard Schmidlin, the managing director Swiss of the auctioneers, opposite meinklassiker.com. It assumes also the contracts will be in the next days under roof and subject.

Because the time pushes: To at the end of September 2009 must be vacated the autocemetery in Swiss canton Berne. In February 2009 the municipality purchase village had rejected the redevelopment concept of the promotion association „historical autocemetery Gürbetal “, since it contradicts the relevant regulations of the environmental law giving. The five-year law case was terminated thereby. On 3 June 2009 the authorities agreed to shift the arranged evacuation of obligation in favor of the auction in the autumn 2009 - against a security of 250.000 Swiss francs.

Already in April Franz Messerli had offered the autocemetery with Swiss on-line auctioneers ricardo.ch - as complete package for a Sofortpreis of 1.2 million Swiss franc. The offer ran to 23. May, approximately 50,000 Klicks had the side - a requirement for the complete collection was missing however.

And those is considerable. Nearly the entire alphabet of the automobile companies is here represented: By Alfa Romeo over Borgward, Cadillac, DKW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Riley, Simca, Tempo up to Valiant or Volkswagen. Eight Mustangs are under it, 13 Mercedes pontoon, twelve Alfa Romeo Giulettas, six Borgward Isabellas, seven Jaguar XJ, four Brezelfenster beetles and three Porsche 356.

Since in Switzerland many Americans were traditionally always sold, marks are such as Chevrolet, Dodge, Plymouth, Pontiac, old mobile, Mercury and Studebaker directly zigfach represent. And also some rarer copies are to be discovered, like a Ferrari 250 GTE Coupé, the chassis of a Fiat 509 from the year 1925, a Austin motor home Gypsy, a Volkswagen bus with Beutler body of 1963 or a Peugeot 203 Cabrio with Worblaufen body of 1949.

Since years inside walter Messerli and its son Franz had turned 1933 off into the 1980er on the area of the Messerli autoutilization GmbH partly cannibalized car and had left to back conquest by nature. In the meantime the substantial accumulation sank in verwildertem plant stature - a mystische atmosphere put over the cars. 2007 were based the promotion association, which fought for the preservation of the autocemetery as cultural monument. Since then approximately 30,000 visitors succumbed to the morbiden charm of the rusting beautifulnesses.

In the meantime also the university for Konservation and restoration of the cantons new castle, Berne and law in La Chaux-de-Fonds discovered the autocemetery. The wrecks were suitable outstanding, in order to investigate autopreservation techniques. With Messerlis permission students infer systematically samples, around thereby a Materiothek for research and training purposes at present construct. Special attention wants to give the school to the autoinstruments.

And also Reinhard Schmidlin and its coworkers from the neighbouring Toffen are regularly locally. For May the negotiations between the old timers gallery Toffen, the municipality purchase village and Franz Messerli now already persist. Schmidlin hopes that everything goes well - Messerli is not a simple official contact.

Altogether the internal message list, which is callable already on the Internet site of the old timers gallery, contains 782 vehicles. More information starting from 15 August 2009 on-line will be available, since the auctioneers have two weeks summer holidays starting from 20 July. A Vorbesichtigung is daily planned starting from 12 September 2009.

Since 1991 organize the old timers gallery two to three auctions per year - with on the average 1,500 visitors and a regular sales ratio between 65 and 85 per cent. The probability that the costs of redevelopment and evacuation come in again, is thus high. Better anyhow than a scrap press, with which Messerli had threatened again and again: The price for scrap irons is since the last year in Switzerland around 60 per cent pleases - on 200 to 250 francs per ton.

Should be interesting to see what happens at auction for Herr Messerli, but it is a shame his artistic vision will be lost.
Wish I had known of the location at Kaufdorf when visiting Switzerland a few years ago... we drove past that place at least twice.
Interestingly, before hearing of the auction plans this photostitch was posted on Gigapan and later featured on Bring a Trailer:

It really does have a surreal beauty.
