Thread: 68 T/R pics?

  1. #91
I think it should also be noted that there is no T/R like there is an RS, ST or RSR. The factory never referred to them as T/R cars. Like Raj mentioned, they were primarily 911Ts that were modified for racing purposes (Rally, Gr. 3 etc.)

Not to take anything away from this model, I love the 911T that was modified to go racing. I have one myself but for purposes of being accurate I don't think that calling it a T/R is correct.

If a 911T was modified to go racing by the factory then it just that: A factory modified 911T. Is it worth more than a 'regular' 911T? Probably. Is it a T/R? No.

    Cheers,
    n.

My appologies for derailing great thread to discussion about my car.

Then again, back to my question, why are the iol cooling lines outside the rockers on previously posted "T/R" cars? Mine T with Rally Kit ( is that good?) has lines in a rockers.

In regards to the inside mounted oil lines: I think that just reaffirms that there was no ONE way to modify a 911 to go racing. If the car was modified by a privateer after it left the factory then all bets are off. Rally Kit doesn't include the oil lines on the 911T.

Also, some of the cars in this thread (like the orange/white Seiler 911T Gr. 3 car) were not a factory modified 911T. The Seiler 911T was a plain-jane 911T that Seiler modified to Gr. 3. It didn't get flares or 906-type twin plug engine until much later in its life. Thus the oil-lines on that car are not a good representation of a factory modified 911T.

Pretty sure the O'Neil car is real. I first met Walt Mass and Bruce at the Vara Pomona races years ago and remembered the car from the monterey porsche events as well. The car has a mix of R and S parts that was ordered that way from the factory.
It is still in nor cal, and i will be asking Bruce to weigh in when i speak to him next week

    68 T/R pics?

Dave, if I remember correctly, (now that's asking a lot!) I visited with O'neil at the 98 Monterey and I thought he told me the car was ordered and built special for a family member of the Mahle Co. And here's the tricky part, I don't think he claimed it as one of the R's, but rather just had a lot of R pieces. Does that jive with what you know about it?

that's what i remember too. I was all skeptical when i first saw the car in Palm springs quite a few years ago, but after discussion with bruce, it was pretty much revealed as a special wishes car (if indeed that was what the department was called back then?) , rather than being an R. It was never represented by Bruce as an R, in spite of a lot of those pieces being on it

Here is a question. Back in 1983-84 an older gentleman came into the shop with a swb 911S with a lot of cool race parts on it. Headers, sport exhaust, hood lamps, possible 7R wheels, the super early sport seat with plaid center , and a unhealthy amount of rust on/thru its yellow exterior. He was just there to have us tune and smog the car (required back then) and we never saw him again. He was pretty busy and did not have time to chat about the car (shame)
Wonder if anyone reading here ever saw that car? or its whereabouts

    Great Thread

After re-reading this thread it makes me realize the fine line between the early cars and their racing counterparts. So unlike today where the difference from a cup car to even an RS is great.

I hear you Raj. The 2010 GT3RS is a special car. Still quite a distance from a flying lizard.....
