Thread: Old rally photos, Porsche 911

  1. #491
It is true that the rally was canceled. The picture on the white 911S is the car that Vic Elford would have started with the RAC Rally 1967. The photo I scanned from Lars Helmer's private photo album. He told me that everything was ready for the start, but the rally was canceled, and therefore their number plates on the cars. The other images are also captured them at the RAC Rally.

That is also the information I have

I also have it recorded that the Elford car was "privately" entered in Gp 3/4 even though it was obviously a factory car.

I don't know for certain but the photographic evidence is that it is the same car that was entered in Le Mans in 1967 as car #43 for "Franc" and Fischhaber. If so, it seems the car would be 308101S.

Below are two additional photos from the aborted RAC, an Advertisement featuring the car in RAC format, and a photo that looks like it was taken at the factory with the 1967 Le Mans number on it.

For those interested in Stuttgart plates (and "sister cars") there was also a white S with the plates S ZP 739 as car #42 at the 1967 Le Mans for Linge and Buchet. I have its chassis number recorded as 308176S.Name: ready for le mans.png

Thx for the very thorough details as always Hugh.

As to options , at least with this car . There should be a Kardex on file. The entrant of the sister car at 1967 Le Mans (S - ZP 739 as per Hugh) Auguste Veuillet . Seems to have ties going way back with the Factory :

    1951 Le Mans 24 / Porsche / Auguste Veuillet - Edmond Mouche / 20th overall , 1st S1.1 (356SL , #356/2-063)

Just finished reading John Buffum's biography, "In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion" (highly recommended!). A few tidbits & pics:

Buffum got interested in rally while stationed in Germany in 1967. He got a fake press credential and followed the 1968 Monte Carlo where he was befriended by Vic Elford (who won the rally) and the Porsche team. When he returned to the Army base he purchased a SWB practice car from the factory and did several TSD-type rallies in Europe with the goal of going to Monte Carlo. His buddy took the car out one night after a few too many drinks and ran it into a barn, totaling the car and the barn. He bought another car from the factory, this time a '69 911T. He and an Army buddy who had never sat in a rally car before entered the 1969 Monte Carlo Rally and finished 12th overall!! They had USA spelled out in electrical tape on the roof and a Connecticut license plate.

Also note what appear to be small strips of plexiglass attached to the cowl, just below the wipers. I've never seen this 'satanic detail' before and they appear to be diverters for snow/rain.

When Buffum returned to the States, he did a lot of sports car racing. He teamed up with Ralph Meaney and Erwin Kremer in a 914-6GT for the 1971 Daytona 24 Hour, finishing 8th overall. Apollo 12 Astronaut Pete Conrad joined him for the 1971 Sebring 12 Hour but they DNF'd with a broken engine mount. For 1972 he bought a Ford Escort and got class wins with John Fitzpatrick sharing the driving at Daytona and Sebring. In 1973 Buffum drove another Ford Escort in the TransAm series and became the U2 TransAm Champion. In 1974, he bought 2 BMW 3.0 CSL's and entered the IMSA Camel GT. The cars were hopelessly out-classed by the 74 Porsches and they bailed halfway thru the season. That's when he turned to rallying full-time.

He eventually bought this 1971 911 for rallying in the US and ran it in the 1975 season with much success. I'm not sure if it is an ex-factory car or what. This was the so-called "Let's Boogie Carrera" - the side script reads 'Let's Boogie' He won the SCCA ProRally Championship with 4 victories in the 911 and 4 victories in the Escort. Winner of the 1975 FIA Criterium du Quebec:

At the end of 1975, he purchased Zasada's works 73 Carrera and campaigned that in 1976/77. He won 9 rallies, including the 76 Northern Lights Rally in Michigan (color foto) and the 76 Olympus Rally in WA and was National Rally Champion both years.

Here are a couple of pictures of his car, in 1968 at the Rally Ulm (with John looking impossibly young), and 1969 at the Monte Carlo Rally.

I have to wait until Mason finishes the book until I get to read it. Mason finally caught up with John at the New England Forest Rally and got him to sign it.
