re: shockingly light -- you didn't happen to weigh one of the balsa reinforced lids, did you?
OliveR: thank you for posting the pics of the R oiling system plumbing - that will be most helpful, particularly when viewed in conjunction with the diagram provided by Varunan.
37yrold 911: Sorry, but the balsa lid went to the shop before getting weighed on the scale. But I can say that it is easily carried with one hand. In stark contrast, wrestling the old steel lid into the basement had me looking for Raj's cell in case the big MI struck.
There is more progress to report. After shooting the first coat of primer, the sanding begins to get everything nice and flat and attend to any issues that come up along the way. Nothing major arose during this phase of preparation.
Does anyone have a period image of an ST fuel bay that could be posted here?
I am also very interested to know if the metal hold down strap as seen on the tank in the image posted by OliverR in post # 25 above was used on any ST in period, whether for Rally or Circuit use.
Thanks,

There are many details to attend to along the way. For example, the pedestal to mount the coil brackets was welded in while the torch was out to redo one of the the engine mount brackets.
If you have suggestions please chime in.
Gussets on jack tubes are typical of all Race Dept rally prepped cars. These were copied from another board member's MY 1972 2.5 ST M471. Although built as a Circuit Racer, his M471 shares many details with Rally prepped STs, perhaps indicating that at least some of the cars saw duty in both venues.
Interestingly, the jack tube gussets are virtually identical to those on a Rothman's SCRS at the shop - indicating that proven preparation techniques in the Race Dept were systematically applied over the years.

A couple days of sanding and the tub is ready to go back into the booth for a final primer coat.

Jon:
The CoA and the tag on the door hinge post show that this S was originally delivered in Olive.
This color is paint code 3939S, the S suffix indicating that it was a Special Order color for the 1971 MY.
This is one of those controversial hues from the longhood color palette.
Although this S is a hot rod, it just did not seem right to us to go for a color change, so it is going to be OLIVE.

OK, so let's see what all that metal work looks like when cloaked in Olive.
Perhaps Olive is another shade befitting the Chris Nielsen approach to a finding a period color that suits the full round contours and compound curves of the ST body work.
We will get a better idea once the bright work is back on the car contrasting with fresh lamps, lenses and black SWB Werk Crew decos and lettering.
Here #694 is seen in the booth immediately after shooting the first color coat.
Well, any thoughts?

That is going to look so BADASS!
I love Olive on these cars.

Thanks Michael.
Couple more pics from the paint booth of the back end.
Second image provides a better view of the nine inch rear flare - sorry for the over exposure.
