Thread: re tom dance

Bobby has told me the story of Tom Dance many times. He couldn't believe his enthusiasm nor his "stones" for driving an "unknown" (bought from an unknown) all the way back to CT.

John Ashford and I put that car together in the early 80's whch seems like a blink of the eyes. Where did the time go?
I would swear Bobby owned the car forever. I have good memories. Some are funny.....well, they are all funny. Good Ju-Ju in that car. Driving to GOK to pick it up from being painted. Rebuilding the engine. Restoring the interior. Getting serverely hosed spraying a headliner in a closed garage. Racing a Lamborghini Countach to 110mph on I-95 and losing all power which was probably just as well as he was kicking our ass anyway.

Every car, like each of us, has a story to tell. That they are inanimate things means we "speak" for them. The best part of the hobby is sharing our experiences with each other about "our cars" and tell the stories of those we've met on our journey.

    Godspeed, Tom Dance.

    My condolences,

    Tom

Thanks Tom & Bobby; great sentiments. For Tom Dance, I am sure it was about more than the cars. It was about how they made him feel.

For all the antagonism of the board, it is the threads like this that I enjoy the most; the threads that celebrate the passion.

Yes Tom, I did own that 70 S for many years. 13 years I think. This goes to show that when Tom Dance bought it from me in 2002 (I think), he must have had a crystal ball. He must have seen the Early 911 S wave coming. You won't believe the ridiculous amount that I sold it for. Still kicking myself about the one that got away. I bought that S, "Elvira" on Halloween of 1989 (she was black at that time) and enjoyed her during my ownership. We had many first in class auto-x victories. Remember the old phrase "I was country before country was cool" well that's how I felt. Back in the 80's and 90's it seems that no one knew how special these cars really are. Tom Dance had a feel for where the market was going. I must say that when Tom showed me photos of what he had done to Elvira I just about died. I thought that he had ruined my beloved S. You see, I prefer the lowered look with S spoiler, ducktail, Momo, sport seats. You know, ready for battle and Tom raised it up to US spec height and basically went for the stock look. That's the thing about theses cars, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I hope whoever ends up owning Elvira will stay in touch with me and keep me updated on this very special (to me) S.
    Bobby
