    afmsx gearboxes?

I am just about to embark on a gearbox build for a hotrod with an early classic gear stack. Could I hear from members of the board who are running these gear sets and living with it on a day to day basis

    MSX Gears in a 901

    Merry Christmas - Tom,
MSX is the top of the stack that we run in our "Daytona" 901 boxes in the vintage 2.0L 911 Race Class. We swap out the 901 gearbox for another that we have specifically built for Daytona's long runs at the rev-limiter (8200 RPMs on 225/50/15s). It certainly allows you to gererate some speed when at top end. I would think that might be pretty tall for most street cars, but I've only used that setup in race applications.

I'm running A-F-M-S-X gears in my '67 which has a hi-spec 2.7 that dyno'ed at 220. The gears feel short and and seem just right for PIR. I love 'em, but some on this board like even shorter gears. If you get much shorter on the tall gears you enter into ear-plug range for freeway driving.

    Cheers,
    JohnA

P.S. This has been discussed here a lot - you might try searching on various keywords.

My 67S is running A,E,I, O, U. At 7200 RPM, with 195/65/15 tires, I am doing 118MPH in 5th. This is enough speed to put you in Jail playing Rock Hockey with Bubba!! It is like driving a go cart on the street, and soooooooooooooooo much fun Who cares about gas mileage, even with these gears, if I stay out of it, I can get at least 18MPG, or more

This is a stock setup but you knew that. ( www.carquip.com ) Should be easy to find lots of them floating around. I like mine just fine. Spacing is pretty good. Stock 5th could be longer.

    Good luck!

as another data point, my 2.0 litre car is running AFKQU with 205/60 tyres. its built to run to 8000 or so but i normally shift about 7500. really nice rpm drops between shifts.

    Cam:

That's probably a lot of fun with the extra torque you have. Stoplight drag races would be interesting.

    stock ratios.

the fact that this is a factory stack in some of the early cars is one of the drawing points. I was able to find a good early box for cheap. The box will be hooked up to a hotrod 3.2 short stroke motor. I am thinking with that motor, and those gears , the car should feel like Eade's on steriods with a 130+ mph top end . I am definitely going for the go kart thing, not an interstate cruiser. I have been thinking that x is probably is the lowest gear I could live with in the 5th spot. I guess that was what I was wondering when I wrote the post. I am think this stack should feel like airport gears when mated with a high reving large dispacement motor.

Because the donor box was so cheap, I can add a Guard LSD and billet plates. I appreciate the advise for custom stacks , I will probably wait on custom stacks until I try this. and see if x is what I hope.
