Ahhhhhhhh... "The Whitehouse" in Niles. Fond memories!

Your short box scenario is exactly what I was trying to avoid with the ZA. The ZA is what Porsche used with the 914-6 to spin it a bit faster in that mid-engined configuration. It was to help cooling from what I understand. I think I'll still get about 16mpg but, what would you expect from a high compression 2.5?

    backwards 3rd

O Yes Whitehouse in Niles, I came out of there very drunk a few times in the 70s in my VW days 1972 Yellow Bug.
I put the backwards gear in 901 gearbox because it was FREE! I spend enough money on the Q forth to build a stock trans. Anyway all the gears are spaced very well for a short box for Gingerman Raceway. Since the longest straight is still very short at least I can use up all of 4th on it, and just a little of 5th. This box makes the car about 10 to 15 seconds quicker per lap.
I also own a 2000 Civic SI which has very short gears in stock form so both car feel about the same on the street except the Honda has a little more top end. A "X 5th" in the 911 at 7300 is about 132 mph. The Honda SI (1600cc) stock gears on 205/50-15" in 5th at 8300 rpm red line is 143. Down hill on the St Joe Valley parkway N of the state line.
