Short gears are mandatory in my opinion for smaller motors. afmsx is really perfect in front of a 2.7. I suspect the 3.2 will have a broad enough torque band that you could run taller gears without compromising performance.

cam, when did you change ratios

    Cam

From your signature, you have a 71T that would have started life with a 2.2T motor with a box with a Za 5th gear. Did you upgrade the engine before you tried the AFMSX ? How much of your new joy is engine and how much is gear box? tom

    Hi Tom

The car had the 2.4 engine in it when I bought it. The box was rebuilt with the shorter gears and billet intermediate plate about 18 months ago.

The joy is all box Made a big difference in the way it pulls though the gears, much more enjoyable as it falls into the 'slot' in the rev range each time you go up a gear.

    Cheers

    Tom you're welcome

I was out testing my new in car video system yesterday, the footage might give you some idea as to the gear splits.......

Tom, I just had Thomas build me an A,F,M,S,ZA for my -6 with a 2.5. It's still on the floor of the garage but I'm hoping it's the magic bullet.

    who is thomas?

    Hi Eric

I hope all is well. You have opted for the same bottom gears with a higher 5th. I assume that is for highway cruising. What ratios did you have before? Did you go for billet intermediate plate or side cover?

Is Thomas a gearbox guru I should know about? thanks tom

All is well. Thanks Tom. How are things in the great NE?

Thomas is T H O M A S on "World". He's in Santa Ana. He does pretty good work. He was able to set the R&P depth as well.

I had it running on a stock 915 (1975) in my 911 for now. The close ratio gears will be a joy.

I opted for the ZA because it's slightly shorter than the ZD and I feel it will help for highway stuff with this 2.5. Being slightly shorter I "should" be able to stay in the power band withouut downshifting into a shorter 4th if I encounter a grade.

My 2.5 is high on HP and low on torque so I'll need it to be in the 3.5k range. This is also why I elected not to get the intermediate plate or side cover. I don't think it will be needed with this motor. I'm not doing burnouts.

    need to know tire size

    Hi Tom,
Are you are using the car for tracks or street? I have two boxes for my 67S 2.0L engine. One stock box A-F-M-S-Z and short box in car now, it is A-F-KA-Q-X. The 3rd gear is a backwards ZD from a 914. I run 205/50-15" tires on street and track with the car sitting very low. The track I run on most of the time is Gingerman Raceway in South Haven Mi. it is 1.9 mi. long roadcorse. The short box works very well on track, but on the street 5th is to short. At 70 or 75 I'm turning over 4000 rpm for interstate. With the stock box on street or interstate I can get about 28 mpg. The short box I'm running to much rpm and get about 12 to 15mpg on street/interstate. I would love to have a 6 speed in car. I would have a box that 6 would be for crusing. It would be like this A-F-KA-Q-X-Z, that way I could do both track and crusing.
