960885 is a 911S engine type 901/02 (not sure why you have 020, but figure it is a typo), and well into the production of that type. Still an aluminum case, probably cast Aug 1966, with case half versions 1.02 2.01. The left case half is the second version that was introduced at the time of the 911S engine, so I believe it has something to do with the needs of the S engine. It would be interesting to know the casting dates on each half, and the pairing #. Original engine to car with VIN near 306900 built in mid Dec 1966.

Yes, the 020 was a typo. I thought it was an S case but wasn't 100% sure. I'll get the rest of the info when I can.

    Thanks.

case number 14806 indicates a mag case; (anything over 12100 is mag, the transition is somewhere between 12000 and 12100). Thanks for the info.

Thanks. 901197 was in a car completed about May 1965. The engine itself was probably produced in March or April. We could narrow things down a bit if you can find the date codes on each engine case half that would be found behind the crank pulley. Look for a two digit year (65) surrounded by a ring of dots (count the dots).

Where does one find the data to know what VIN this engine belongs to?
