Thread: Type 901/xx Engine Build #'s

  1. #101

    1969 911S Targa ebay

Hi Dave. No, I haven't bid - ends tonight. I looked at it and it would be a good candidate for me to restore - mainly I like the signal green color, but $30k + full restoration, color change and repair costs would be prohibitive.

I have a matching numbers '69T with COA that I'll forward you the data on.

What data besides VIN, engine serial, and build numbers do you collect?

    Thanks, Bill

Paint codes (the actual code on the badge rivetted to the hinge post), and the transmission #. Also, if the car has a Safety Compliance decal (aka DOT sticker), then the date code from it is useful. I can also use the "secret" number from the dash; however I treat these numbers as confidential info. Having all the #'s associated with the VIN allows us to infer the possible range of such numbers for other cars. This helps to ascertain if a possible combination might be 'numbers matching' or not.

Ok, I'll gather-up what I have. I do have the C of A which I think is helpful in validating key numbers in your sequences.

    Cheers, Bill

(the '69S sold at $30k and, I believe, is headed to Germany)

    engine numbers

i was at an event a couple years ago and was doing some research on a R project and recorded these numbers from 67s and 68s. don't remember the alu or mag. and not sure if these are duplicates to what you have. couldn't figure out what the build number was. GREAT JOB. just a note, the engine # probably was not stamped on the case until it was tested so no numbers would be lost and so the type and build numbers were there to keep track. the yanks of course like chevy, stamped the vin when the car and engine were mated on the line. 909247 901/05 5338, 961737 901/02 9395, 4080075 901/02 9337, 4080524 901/02 11396, 4081121 901/02 14080. gordon

That is very weird; out of sequence by a lot, almost as though the two photos (serial # , type & build ) are from two separate engines. Build 6576 should be between 960492 and 960841. Serial 961993 should have build in the 88xx region.
