Thread: Type 901/xx Engine Build #'s

    Engine number sequence

    Dave,
you are doing a spectacular job. This is the most complete and accurate listing that has ever been published.

For a number of years - 40 or so - the factory was mum about the engine sequence numbers, I can speculate this was a method to verify a case was as produced. I used it as a "tell" when looking at the 232 cars from 1964 and as you can see it is very systematic for that period.

You have uncovered one more of the factory intentional or unintentional "secrets". Well done. Thank you for filling in our knowledge base. Keep the posting coming...this is good stuff.

Thanks Bob. This is fun research. There are a lot of things that can be learned from this data if we can gather enough of it. I'd like everyone on the registry to help gather this info from every engine that can be found. What we can expect to learn are transition points from one engine type to another, relative dates, and in some instances, the final serial #'s of some engine types. For example type 901/05 starts at 907001 and goes to 909000, or does it? The highest I have is 908070, and from the build #'s I don't think it could have ended at 909000. So there is lots to learn yet.

Yes there is a disconnect with your numbers. It does not fit the pattern at all. Either the numbers you have provided have an error somewhere, or the pattern that we assume is not correct. Yes please, do provide photos for documentation purposes when possible. Whatever the outcome, we can learn from this.
I sincerely hope the data is not abused. I'm not quite sure how that might be possible, and I would entertain discussion of that possibility either in this thread or privately.

I am aware off that, but wouldn't it be interesting to get the exact number? So when people provide you w/ their numbers and their build number is between 11800-12200 they tell you whether it's an Alu or Mag case since the type number doesn't tell?

Yes, this is certainly part of the research. These are the engine #'s we have to find build #'s for to fully understand this transition:

    Type # ___AL___ ___MG___
    901/02 4080681 4080682
    901/03 2080640 2080641
    901/06 3080371 3080372
    901/07 3180182 3180183
    901/08 4180099 4180100
    901/13 2180107 2180108
    901/14 3280631 3280632
    901/17 3380148 3380149
    901/30 3880004 3880005

Another number worth looking for the the numbers on the case halves showing that the two are a matched pair. It would be interesting to see how high these numbers get, and their relative sequence to the build #'s. Anyone have a photo to illustrate these numbers?
