I have updated the first posts with new data today. I also found what I strongly believe to be a typo in the build number of an engine:
    901/14 3281505
This engine case is stamped 15958, but the serial # sequence places it at 15985; therefore I conclude that there was a typo error where the last two digits were reversed. Here there are 71 engines in a sequence of one type only; they should be in sync, but 3281505 would be badly out of sync at 15958.
    901/14 3281463 15943
    901/14 3281492 15972
    901/14 3281505 15985
    901/14 3281533 16013

That engine case is almost certainly aluminum. The magnesium cases didn't appear until early in the 12000 range. You can confirm by finding the casting part # below the oil return tubes ending in 101.xR and 102.xR; if the x is 0 then it is aluminum, and if x is 1, then it is magnesium. If the engine is stripped down, then there are other very useful numbers to find.

So next to the oil temp sending unit is is stamped 900406* so does this mean the 406th engine built

Actually no. They started at 900101. If you look for the build # you will see that it is 306. And that is the original engine. What is the paint code?
