Talking Factory S/T questions needed for build

    I should say answers needed.....
Ok the time has come to start the repair / remove / add part of the body work. The car is stripped to shell , underseal is off and we are about to start on the rust repairs .
So as we are building a S/T rep based on the "off the factory floor" rather than a specific team car i need to start removing items not installed on S/T's .
So gib,raj ,hugh plus others lets start with the rear engine bay and underside rear.
Would the following have been installed ?
    - engine to body seal and mounting rails
    - feed pipe for deck lid release ( even though the deck lid would have rubber catches on the out side
    - bracket for the hydro stay to hold up the deck lid
    - bracket for the fuel pump mounted on the torsion bar housing (if not were would the factory have mounted it )

    In the to be added part ;
    - would the shock towers have braces as per the rsr
    - would there be other bracing added to the engine compartment and if so were
    - what would the rear sway bar have been and how would it mount to the body (photo would be handy)

I would be Greatfull for any info

    ST info

    Hi John,

This is from '72 ST 911 230 0495. I have pictures of the car before being disassembled and some after the car was disassembled and plastic media blasted. The engine lid pull tube is not there. The rear shock reinforcements are shown in the pictures below along with the hole in the bracket to mount the engine lid strut. I did not notice additional bracing around the engine lid but I have lots of photos of the engine area. Let me know what you need and I will have it or be able to get it next time I visit my car.

i am building off a 72 body , the reason i am looking at this in detail is that i'm in to detail. There is no reason ( while i have the chance ) not to ad / remove the correct items

    Raj,

It would be fantastic if those changes could be documented publicly...

I can try to help-there are quite a bit chassis development in 72 going into 73-I have been cataloging these changes which is not easy to do into the 73 RSR-besides what we can do with photos-I would photo as many factory cars of that period to come up with the details. There are clearr details of chassis mods that occured in the factory as they went from the ST to the RSR.If you have not done much to catalog in the past my suggestion is wait and do it slowly.

I would touch base with a few restorers who are quit knowledgable.PM or PM me your number and i will call you.

As i have only just decided to do the s/t project ,rather than resto. the "T" i have ,all i have to date is all the details given in all the s/t threads on 911s and pelican (gibs car / the martini cars / etc...) and ref. to the all the books and mags i have going back to the early 90"s.
The photos that have been posted are great but most will not show chassis details as they are engine shots or other .
what i would like to ask ,with the cars you and matt have, is offer to pay postage and cost for a cd or memory stick and have you send over your photo collection of the builds and any historic photos of the 72 era.
As Gib is flying into NZ (and i hope to catch up with him) i also hope to have him bring the collection of photos from his build .(gib if you read this i'll be in touch)
Is there also any recommended books for ref??

Give yourself more credit my friend..... While much is undocumented - everyone is capable of understanding the variances of these cars. They were throw-aways. They were supposed to be raced - and scrapped. They were not built for any other purpose than to be "used".

I have restored several high profile cars that those in-the-know insisted were wrong; only to be deemed correct by the factory down the road.

There is no "standard". They were all different.

I will just tell this story-when i first acquired Zasada's car -I was thinking why would they stick a 2.8 litre in a ST-I was going to build a 2.5 litre engine and stick the 2.8 litre on a stand.I was sure they had it wrong and all the endless questions at every event why does a ST have a 2.8.There was an interview with josh, jurgen and others during 1989 when josh restored the car hand written notes-if i were to post the questions posed by them-josh and steve carr-you will understand that they did not try to build it to a standard that was accepted but a true representation- is it accurate-i really don't know all i can tell you is 20years or so years later we are still pondering the same questions. It really is unchartered terratory-but my only gripe is people tend to catagorize these cars into ST,RS and RSR -restoring to those standards because there is too much money involved and no one wants to take a bath.Just so everyone knows when i purchased my car supposedly another 0001 exists. So,one can't blame people for restoring it to the standards, but there is no standard and one has to try to do the best job with the limited info at disposal. With time and patience and having an open mind one has a chance at arriving at the truth-I still entertain the possibility that my car is a fake-if one does not they are really not being honest with themselves-that is inherent in collecting.

One thing i know- i may still have it all wrong-more question than answers-simply because before these things simply did not matter.Sorry for the big run on.

Raj - what a refreshing (&, unfortunately, pretty rare) attitude.

I would like to thank you for your open/unselfish (& un-secretive - if there is such a word!) sharing of information - many (most ?) people who are in a postion to investigate these details first hand would keep this information to themselves.
