    1968 911s ???

    I've got a line on a 1968 911S soft window Targa. From what I have read, no "S" cars were imported due to emission issues. I have measured and it's is a short wheelbase car. It also has German gages. Attached is a picture of the VIN tag.

    Here's the numbers;
    Karossirie 11850368
    Kunstaharzlack 97-6809-G

    Can anyone confirm that this is a genuine "S"? Also, does this number confirm the year and tell the body color?

    Thanks
    Larry

    From my numbers book, a 11850XXX would be aa '68 S Targa. 6809 is the color code for tangerine.

    I agree with John. Looks like it was a private import at some time.
    What is a little strange is the paint code. Your photo is pretty good, but if you can provide a better image of the G at the end of the 6809-G I think we will find the G was over-stamped with an L. The typical code for 97 ends with L. So I think they corrected an error.

    6809 corresponds to Glasurit blutorang tangerine so G is correct. I think Lesonal code was P2002. It does however appear to be double stamped and makes one wonder how many beers Fritz had for lunch that day. The point is probably moot as your car appears to be repainted. 97 indicates the paint was baked in the oven at 284 deg F

    Looks pretty clean. Although I'm surprised that the front blinkers and headlights aren't correct. RM states correct tool kit, although that really isn't the case. That's three 68s I've seen recently being sold.
