I have confirmation that the factory set the transition date between 65 og 66 model year at 1. July! The COAs issued with cars produced after 1. July 65 is wrong. I have asked the person with this recent factory supplied info to post in the "final transition" tread.

Hi all,
New to the forum. I just posted a response to this model year v.s. production year question in General Info referring to an e-mail I sent to Zithlord last night that might be of interest.
On a side note, on Wednesday this week, I drove out to see a silver 65 911 sunroof for sale here in Seattle with the same paint code 6206 (the owner misquoted it as 6202, but I verified the paint plate as 6206) which is a special order code from 1962 as the factory didn't offer silver from '64 through '65 on the regular paint list. Unfortunately, the owner had dissasembled the car and sanded the body down to bare metal then needed room in his shop and pushed it outside, covered it with a cloth cover and then a blue plastic tarp and let it sit in the Pacific Northwest winters for a couple of years. Needless to say, the body was ugly. I'm sure it could be saved by someone with skills. It needs seat pans, Longitudinals, front and rear pans and probably structural metal work. The body panels looked amazingly dry and straight. The engine I saw was number 901850 which is a correct era motor (he had no C.O.A. to confirm a match) and from the pile of parts he showed me, it appears all the bits are there for trim and interior. He asked me what I thought it was worth and I said between 7 and 9K. He's asking $11,800 or best. I told him to put an ad in here. His craigslist ad has since expired but here is the text. He has pictures of the car after he stripped it but before he put it outside so if you call him, you need to ask for picture of the car in its present state! Our 1966 Porsche 911 Factory electric sunroof coupe was manufactured in 1965 and is believed to be one of the very earliest sunroof 911 cars made, with very few earlier cars existing . It is currently a roller, and is partially disassembled for restoration. The body is partially stripped to bare metal, and you can clearly see the condition of the car. The car will require rust repair to floorpans, and has other typical early 911 rust issue. It has the original wood steering wheel and wood dash inserts, which have been restored. The matching number engine is partially disassembled, and appears completed and in good overall condition. From what I have found the car appears to have most or all of the body panels stamped to match the vin, and are original to the car. Clear title of course. Porsche COA will be included in the sale of the car. For the early 911 enthusiast interested in taking on the restoration of this rare car, it has the potential to be a rare and desirable collectable Porsche. This engine MAY be correct, but not likely. It is off by about 500 from what one would expect, and that is a significant difference. The rule of thumb is to add 100 to the last digits of the VIN, so 902358 would be more reasonable. This rule applies up to VIN's near 303800 since they only built about 3910 901/01 engines.

Researching Paint codes and Engine Build numbers
I went to look at the car today. I can answer a couple of questions I've heard. The owner is selling the car because he owns another, earlier 1965. The owner is not a very early 911 expert, but he is definitely a Porsche enthusiast who knows 911s. The early features are there as described. Here's the car in his garage.
The car has Webers as previously noted. Maybe he'll swap this engine that was sitting next to the 65 for the one in the car. If so, the bidding is going to go crazy.

This car is a very early 1966 production (produced in September of 1965) and as far as our research shows is one of the first 25 Porsche 911s supplied with a factory sunroof!
Finished in silver (code# 6206) over red interior, this Sunroof Coupe is very attractive and highly collectable.
The car has had one full repaint in its original color over 10 years ago. The paint still shows very nice with good shine and only very minor imperfections.
The interior was redone with new carpets, headliner and seats using all correct materials. The original wooden steering wheel has been refurbished, while the dashboard wood is still untouched, original and in beautiful condition.
Most of the cars bright work is original and very nice with some patina. It carries the early 4 screw air vents in the front. During restoration, the floors of the car have been replaced due to some corrosion issues. Photographs of the restoration are available on request.
Mechanically, the car is brilliant and performs just the way it was intended to. The original 2.0l engine has had a full rebuilt and has only traveled about 1000 miles since. The sometimes quirky original Solex carbs have been replaced by more reliable Weber’s.
Of course the car is fully numbers matching with Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and the original Kardex card in the file!
