    Fuel tank find

On Tom's 'another hot rod' thread, I posted a pic of my fuel tank - as similar to the one Tom has got for his car..
With help from Tom and prompted by a post from Hugh - I have done some further digging and it seems possible that I have inadvertently stumbled upon the original tank from this blue car. Great. Now I am thinking about maybe looking into replicating the shell 'fuel door' on the bonnet. Looks like steel with a spring hinge clip riveted on?
Has anyone ever seen this door arrangement on any cars other than this one?

Tom, the spare parts catalogue competetion 911s that you refer to (page4)
    - what is the date on that publication would mid 1970 eqaute to 71MY??
Would these 62ltr tanks been part of the equipment issue on the 'German spec lightweight 911S's' currently being discussed ?

Has anyone got a picture of one of these tanks fitted in period.

    Thanks for everyone's help

Viper MY 71 ST Safari inside blue cloaking device

    Gilbert911:

I am quite sure that the blue ST with the black lid is the same car as the Viper Green Safari ST shown in Hugh's post on the "another the hot rod" thread.

That is 300647, the same chassis whose number is scribed in crayon on your 62L big mouth tank. It could also be a clone of the incorrectly restored Safari - I think there was one around, but in any event, the 1971 300647 Safari was at one time "restored" in those colors. We wound up with the RePa harnesses and padded roll bar from the original MY 71 300647 Safari.

The external hinged fuel door shown in your post on the front lid was a fairly common modification used by race teams to allow through-the-lid filling with quick fill dump cans.

I think the spring loaded fuel door on the lid would be a very interesting period touch on your light weight, but as it was not a "factory delivered" feature on a MY70 light weight 911S, you may want to think twice before taking out the hole saw.

The 62L tank is listed in the factory manual Information Regarding PORSCHE Vehicles Used for Sports Purposes. The copy that I have is the 2. Edition from Model 1970 number 4890.20-200-03-72. I think that means this manual was printed March 1972. A scan of the relevant portion of page 4 is attached to this post.

To your question "Would these 62ltr tanks been part of the equipment issue on the 'German spec lightweight 911S's' currently being discussed ?" I respond in the affirmative, based on the document reproduced below.

Some pics of the lightweights show fuel filler doors on the fender although the one in the attached pic appears to be lacking same, supporting the under the lid tank specification for 70S lightweight.

That tank was a great find - never seen another one.

    Tom

My understanding is that the blue car and the one I posted are one and the same 911 130 0647 Coupè "Safari" 2.2 registration S AA 4825.

the fuel flap was used in all 3 safari cars that year but I have not seen it used in werks cars in any other context.

here is a close up of the flap from one of the other cars (911 130 0637) as well as how the tank was / is under the bonnet.
