Thread: ST/RSR 100/110 litre Fuel Tank

I might be wrong, but start with a regular pre 73 gas tank and cut away the top part and add the extra sheetm. Not easy! Good luck...

A VW hubcap....!!! that's freakin brilliant! I've got a guy out in Ballard who is up to the task, but he's kneedeep in other projects, but I'm hoping he'll churn one out for me this summer. I'll have to compare the hubcap to the "bump" on a real tank.

    cheers,

Anyone have pictures of a original 100L tank without paint?

I'm just wondering if the originals were fabricated like the one in Endo911rs's picture or if they were stamped like the stock tanks are?

I have pics at home of a factory one. The started with a stock tank, cut the top off and welded on a new top. Strange because they did not cut the whole entire top off...the back is still the original top. The 100L new top just wraps over the top rear edge.

The factory 100L tops were stamped in one piece though, not made from several pieces. I researched companies to stamp these out and it was cost prohibitive. My friend made this one for me...took lots of time. He estimated about $2000 to make another one if anyone wanted one.

OOps...sorry about the hubcap... Maybe that would work though!

Love to see the 67, I'm sure we'll catch up somewhere this summer, I might throw another campout, or there's Emory's, etc, etc.

My guy has all the stuff to fab one, but I would guess it's about the cost your guy figured out. Still less than a correct one by a whole lot of money, guess it depends on what you're shooting for.

Yes, and the correct ones are of questionable integrity due to corrosion.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know....The reason they used part of the stock tank might have been due to the limits of what angles could be stamped when making them.

To develop the die's to make the top portion would be about $1500.....but you would need a orginal 100L tank to begin with. I guess it would depend on what demand there is for these.

It is really hard to give dimensions that would be helpful in making a replica tank. Your fabricator would find it more useful to have an actual tank there to make templates from. My friend did this and also took notes with a contour guage so he could duplicate the exact curvatures.

I wouldn't mind helping you but I don't know what dimensions you are looking for and I don't think they would end up being useful.
