Sometimes I watch movies with the sound muted and think about color...Freddie's 911

There are several movies I like to watch simply for the cinematography. I don't care if it's a good movie. If it's a bad movie I'll mute it. I'll watch 'em with my thumb poised above the pause button and freeze certain frames and just...look.

These movies include 300, Man on Fire, The Spirit, Matrix, Sin City, Transporter, Seven and a few more. Note how many Frank Miller involved movies in that list. I love the tobacco skies in 300. I don't care if the cinematography is "unreal". In fact the further away from reality the more I like it.

Oh yeah, I love to watch the opening credits of movies as well for the treatment of typography. Generally I can tell if I'm gonna like the movie within seconds based on the opening credits.

    I'm straying.

So these movies influence my post processing treatment and since I am more of a Photoshopper by trade I can usually make up for not being much of a photographer.

I just got done salvaging a shot that I took of Freddie's 67 911. I should have bracketed a separate exposure for the sky. However, even if I had there wasn't much interest in the sky anyway - nice clear day. So I spliced in another sky shot from my photo library. Then proceeded to do all my usual post processing and manipulation. The final image is probably my favorite shot that I almost didn't even bother opening based on the thumbnail preview but the shape of the building kept pulling me back.

Freddie's car will be in a future issue of ESSES.

What is old can be new again

I followed Freddie's thread with interest and have enjoyed seeing the images you made of his car. The one of his virginal 67 set against the stained corrugated metal of the neglected building is the best. Look forward to seeing what else you have from that shoot - and I can tell from that one that we are going to like the article in an upcoming Esses.

I used to do that in the 70's, but it never came to much...certainly nothing as creative as your work. Nice shot!

    bob,
nicely done. i love the way the buildings radius arch and straight front frame the 911 shape.

i watched the Matrix w/ my 10 y/o boys the other night and had to keep answering "how do you really know we're not in a program right now?" doh, may have freaked them out a little.

Opening credits of "Insomnia", and cinematography in "the Cell" leapt to mind while reading your post.

Nice work on the photo btw, I need to wrap my head around the pshop potential...
