    Vintage Harnesses

I'm a newbie at this show thing and need some advice. When I show my '67 SWB Sports Purposes Coupe at the Carmel Concours it will be equipped with almost exclusively period correct NOS gear for rallying per the Porsche Sports Purposes Bulletin published in 1968.

My question is about harnesses. I can't find a specification for them in the Bulletin and I have a general question. I imagine that these kinds of shows are more about authenticity than function, and that period harnesses, though long expired and useless in competition, would be preferable over current versions - is that correct? And if so, what period harnesses are good ones to use? How about period Autoflugs?

    Thanks for the input.

    Cheers,

I think in this particular aspect - saftey trumps originality... but I could be wrong. There is a member on the 912BBS.org - Ken - who is quite involved and sucessful at showing his car - you might ask him. Sorry, I don't have his email, but you can send him a PM thru the 912 BBS.

maybe just go with a new but period correct belt. diest has been doing motorsports safty equipment since back in the day.

    maybe try one of these

    with their shoulder harness

and perhaps take it to a professional sewing lady or somthing to have them remove the diest logo (cut the threads that were sewn in with a sweing machine) from the shoulders so its all black. if its screen printed on use some kind of goo gone or somthing to remove teh screen printed logo.

i think that would look damn good.

    Concours re harness

John, in theory seat belts and harnesses of any kind are "invisible" to the judges. You cannot lose points because of safety equipment. At least "in theory".

The Carmel Concours is really different than some PCA events in that the judging seems very much less focused on finding specs of dirt and much more intent on rewarding great cars that we would all like to drive. (like yours)

My feeling is install harnesses you like and it can only help.

an auftoflug just came up in the classifieds.. not nos though.. maybe you can get it dry cleaned and see if they can remove the dirt on the orange logo on the shoulder bits? the latches look more 70s than 60s though.

Saftey trumps "pretty". I like the wide unit shown from Diest. No Jethro Bodine setups, please. (rope!)

John, He is correct. I had my '72 Targa in Display at last years Carmel Concours. I chose Display, thinking they were a mini PB Concours, and I drive mine too much. All judges said they were not. Chips, cracks, were okay..just have a great car there ready to show.

As for the harness, install what works for you, not the Judges.

BTW: I'll be looking for you to say Hello. This year my '72 Targa was accepted in the "Judged" catagory, along with my R Gruppe coupe.

I wouldn't recommend the large lever type belts it is very easy to unlatch when you make steering corrections. That is why the new types have a circular latch.

    early belts

Hickok made many of the early 911-912 seat belts and 3 point harness. They had an aluminum crest on chrome buckles, Id like to know if these were fitted to cars in Europe or just U.S. cars?

Here are the harnesses out of my 67. Tag reads...

    Front Side:
    IMPACT
    MODEL NO

    Back Side:
    CUMMINGS & SANDER INC
    A SUBSIDIARY OF A.S.E.
    PACOIMA, CALIFORNIA
    1966
    MEETS OR EXCEEDS SPECI-
    SPECIFICATIONS OF J4c

They clip into the standard eye bolts on SWB cars so you could always swap vintage ones in and out if you really wanted to get that involved.
