ok the details would be:
AAA gold, plus, platinum - which ever gives you the unlimited towing.
Mobile phone is great but hopefully you have the cell coverage to even make that AAA call.
Do you carry jack stands and a hydraulic jack to get under the car? My car has only broken down a couple of times. In mexico once I had 2 Dunlops (crappy tires) go flat and I had to fit a tire off a VW Safari to get to Laredo. And in the middle of texas I had the shims in my MFI collapse going to full rich, I crawled to a gas station and called a tow truck. I think the best thing is to do preventive maintenance and make sure my car is roadworthy before attempting a long trip. I have to say that in the 130,000 miles I've put on my 73 the car has been VERY reliable. If I was going to drive to Patagonia this is the car I'd take.
Any of the newer computer controlled cars scare the H.. out of me. Basically open the hood and stare. My son brought me his Passat once to change a headlight bulb, and after dismantling half the front of the car I gave up.

The most important tool of all Duct tape, and some wrenches, screw drivers and socket kit. that is about it. I carry the oil in the car with me cause it goes in quite frequently......

haha... maybe..

(hense why i cary two spare carbs.. over kill, but jesus, you dont want to know how much the tow bill from barstow to santa ana was when the carb finally had it after trying to lip it as far west as i could).

notice though, i have two lists.. one is cross country the other is local. by local i mean with in my time zone. i will not be carying all of that when i go to the rallye in the vally. for that i will probably cary the 'local' set up, plus a few extra things.
oh.. and i do have AAA too just in case. but if im driving cross country, what good is AAA going to do if i have a break down on US 50 in nevada. tow me for 100 miles, and then do what for the next couple hundred? and what happens when i break down in farmington new mexico? get it towed to bobs vw emporium? billy bobs chevy shop? franks porsche dealership that doesnt know anything about a 68 912? if its somthing that bad, i shouldnt have left home in the 1st place.
ALSO.. a great must have is a PCA magazine. the back of it has phone numbers for contacts for every region. if you get in a pinch, call one of the guys, ask for a shop recormendation or maybe one of their guys can lend a hand or has spares etc.. networking and relationships are good!!
