Thoughts on a 71e targa conversion

Hello, I'm new to the early registry (1st post) but a long time Pelican member. I've had several Pcars over the years, but never an early. I stumbled across what I think is a decent candidate for a 3.0 conversion and I'd like to get some opinions on value.

    - 71e targa; very little rust - some surface in batt box, rockers and elsewhere looks very good.
    - needs driver fender, door and targa redo; needs wheels
    - needs total repaint; new seals, etc.
    - has orig engine core, but has been picked part of many other parts
    - no trans or axles
    - have orig seats (good shape) and panels; new carpets and dash needs work

    My questions:
    - reasonable price to offer; realistic price to pay?
    - my goal is a very nice driver with a 3.0 / 915 in targa. Does this seem like a good starting point?
    - anything critical I should be evaluating on this car? (aside from about $20k in budget and months / years of effort )

    Thanks!

if you don't get it for 5-8K you could end up seriously upside down.

I think if value is a concern then a coupe is a better bet, also unless you have the motor a 3.2 or 3.6 swap would be preferred. I love conversion hot rods (mine's a 73 targa with a 3.2) but financially they are dogs. I bought mine in nice driver condition for a healthy discount below the conversion cost alone

There's a 71T coupe with a 3.0 swap done already currently for sale on this site - it's a fellow Canadian but don't be scared I think importation is a breeze and a car like that could be bought and sorted without becoming a money pit.

I would say less than $4k. A '71e basket case doesn't have any significance. With these older cars always expect to find more rust than what first appears.
