Thread: Suppose we build....

    I think the factory doors (sans window mechanisms) are around 37-38 lb. You can cut much weight out of the complete assembly by going with Lexan windows with a pull strap. FG doors are also availalbe, and can be fit pretty well if you really want to cut weight. It is possible to get a 1750 911 if you really want to go the FG/Lexan and stripped route...it was done in '67....I think.

    Every feature on these long hood cars can be lightened, but some of these techniques will be more modern than in the day...so like everything else in life, it ends up being a compromise. Throw safety out the window (along with heavy windows and doors) and you can have a sub 1800 lb 911. Then stick a 200-250 hp engine in it, and it goes like a scalded dog. Many have BTDT before.

    Foam = Sponge = . . . .

    Attached are some photos of what happened when 'foam' was sprayed into a Porsche --- specifically my Porsche. Basically, the 'foam' turned into a 'sponge,' that over time caught and held moisture, which then rotted-out the panel.

    From my experience, introducing foam into an ungalvanized metal structure . . . is a really, terribley, hugely BAD idea.

    Closed cell ballistic foam wouldn't oxidize quite so readily (terribly or hugely) in a composite or aluminum bumper. Nightmare avoided!

    And Rick, what I did to that hapless WV bus was effective in a way, but irresponsible. I was just a kid living in the now, but I knew it would rot out... sometime after I was long done with it. So it went.

    I've seen the same issues with 914's around the upper corner of the rear fenders by the taillight and at the base of the sail panel. The factory sprayed foam in there and it did/does exactly as described above.

    I would think that is water was getting into that rocker it was probably going to rust out anyway. I've seen plenty of rusted rockers, none with foam inside. he question is: which way will it rust faster?

    Right Jim, I was thinking the same think. In some locales they rust just sitting all by themselves doing nothing but passing the time, without our help.

    Rick,
    I've heard that you can cut a lot of weight by losing that gut and driving in the nude.
    (Just a couple of cheap suggestions)
