This one is from a 1970 ST I coincidentally was able to inspect today:

Both, me and the owner think that the plate has been re-riveted at some point for repaint.

Paint tag without the manufacturer code, 1966 912 built in 1965. Currently painted flat Guards Red (no clear coat), it will be taken back to its original color, which we were told was Polo Red. However, reading this thread, the chart shows that 6402 is Ruby Red.

6402 is Ruby red. Too difficult to determine a color from a photo on my monitor.

I have a replacement plate but need a source of someone who can properly stamp it. Or does anyone know of a source for proper punches?

Chris - when I was in high school our auto shop built VW engines. We had a couple sets of small stamps similar to these that worked well

I tried stamping with a set of 3.5mm and the numbers looked right, but I could not get the strike force consistent, as (for instance) a 1 took less force than any other number, with 8 taking the most. I gave up.

I read again through all of this thread. Is it only me or is there really no specific pattern on when they used adhesive and when riveted plates around MY70?
My 1/70 build S originally had the decal though long gone when I bought the car. It has the dimples in the panel for a drilling guide.

The Karmann cars never used the decals AFAIK.
Porsche built cars seem to have started the year with decals, then went back to riveted plates. It has been a while since I studied this in depth. It would be very useful to get more data with photos, VIN's and perhaps production #'s. If you prefer privacy, then PM me the details.
