Thread: Paint code decals

  1. #31
Bumping up an old thread, I know, but this interests me and the thread is helpful as an archive. I've had five 1970 911s pass through my hands...two Zuffenhausen 70S Targas and a 70T coupe, and two 70T Karmann coupes. All the Zuffenhausen cars had adhesive sticker color tags, and all the Karmann cars had riveted color tags. I've had a few >'69 and '71< cars too, and those all had riveted tags...the only adhesive tags I've seen are on 1970 model Zuffenhausen made cars.

Very odd that they switched only for the one year then went back to rivets. Perhaps too many fell off?

Here are some pics of my former 70S Targa, 70T coupe, and 70T Karmann coupe respectively.

9110300418 which is currently on sale:

Going by the color scheme, 9110301353 (the untouched 700 mile 911S) seems to have a riveted tag:

Not too much of a detour from the original decal/sticker theme, I hope, but does anyone have a good source for rivets for the paint plates? I've successfully extracted a couple in the past, but would like a source for fresh ones.

Really enjoy seeing these paint tags with original paint still in the door sill. Seems these are fairly uncommon.

Years ago I purchased replacement rivets from International Merchantile. You might want to check there. Looks like it is M559 in their catalog.

The correct drive rivets are available from stoddards I think in the 356 section you need "drive pins/ rivets" as they don't require a buck placed at the back to set the rivet, as they have rifleing.
