Question RUF conversion of a '72 2.4S Targa to convertible

Hello to all of you S-people, I would like hereby to ask your opinion about a interesting car that I acquired lately. It's a '72 targa 2.4S that was shipped to RUF/Germany in 1984 to be converted to convertible, using all original parts (I would never do it if the car was mine in 1984). I've got all of the original bills paid by its 1st owner to RUF, not a small amount of money. It's been equipped there with a 911/83 coded Carrera engine, too, plus a full burgundy red leather interior. The car stood in a heated garage for the past 8 years, not moving at all. Now it's a bit tired but complete and rust free, with a running engine. With a little work it can easily and quickly become a daily driver but with some investment a show car. RUF confirmed to me in these days that it's the one and only such they've ever made, therefore it should not be re-converted back to targa. I'm gonna restore it but I do not really like 911 convertibles. On the other hand it's a rare old Porsche in this form made by the oldest and one of the most famous Porsche-tuner company (recognized by the P. factory), with some unique history, and that's documented. Moreover, it's so unique the RUF company representatives remember it clearly, after 27+ years of its make. Which way to go? If I bring it back to targa-body, it loses its uniqueness, thus special value. The RS-engine I have nothing against, it's still the least bad amongst all bads that could have happened "loosing" its matching numbers 2.4S engine (but replaced by that 911/83 by RUF and stamped with its original engine number of 632..., certainly for customs purposes and to avoid "confusion"). Awaiting your opinions. Thank you for your attention.
    G.

PS: the 1st owner probably loved his S targa very much, at the same time wanted a convertible. But did not like G-models, therefore spent some money on that "tour" to and from Germany.

My opinion is to leave it as a convertible, that is where its history is. Would love to see some pictures (as would everyone else!)

I'm with Ed --- just being 1-of-1 makes it special.

    Plus? --- it's Ruf!

Get all your documentation together, including any/all recent correspondence, then? . . . hit the 'Way Back Machine,' put it back as-built.

And keep us updated, will ya? The best threads on this site are the ones where people talk about their cars/share progress on their projects ---- yours should be an absolute hum-dinger. Forget 'bout the Pulitzers --- just take a buncha photos, throw in some commentary . . . share the fun!

Any car touched by the hand of Alois Ruf and company has had it's history enriched because of it. He has a genuine reverence for the early cars along with his interest in creating cutting edge modern machinery. Imagine owning, say, an RS that has been enhanced by Ruf, would that not be a jewel in it's provenance? I'm certain of it.

A while ago I would have agreed with you, as I went through a series of coupes that progressively became harder and more competition focussed. Then I bought a convertible (964 Speedster), partly due its uniqueness and rarity (1 of 14 RHD made). Now I'm a convert and have an early targa as well.

A 911ST coupe driving friend from interstate was in town over the weekend and I gave him the keys to the targa to drive out to the track we were racing at. He loved the targa and commented how fun it was to drive.

Cutting a long story short, I would live with your car for a bit then make your mind up. If you still don't like convertibles then sell it - as I'm sure someone else will like your car as is.

    Ps. Pics!
    Cheers, Ryan

Hello to All of you who answered...Thank you for your feedbacks, opinions, "support" in what to do. Rick asked about how I came accross, also all of you for pics. I have a couple of pics made while towing the car from seller's garage. Will post it to you later today, also the story (if you don't mind but that's not short). Sorry for my late reaction, it's for the time zone differences.

...for me up till now there were 2 exceptions in my "bad" opinion about roofless Porsches: 356 and 911 Speedsters...(congrats on your one!) Now this RUF seems to become the third one...
