    High Speed run..

I took a drive Saturday from Bozeman to Billings for a small PCA show. 150 miles each way.. I was joined for the drive over by three good friends each in pcars. A 964 Carrera, an 87 Turbo and a 56 Speedster.. The Speedster and the Turbo both won their groups at the show.

Coming back late in the evening Evan (turbo) and I came up on a small group of 928's on the Mountain pass between Livingston and Bozeman (turns out they had toured Yellowstone for the day). Evan and I had been runnning in the low 80's most of the trip back, including a 30 mile encounter with a Cayenne Turbo pulling a four horse trailer....

When I saw the 928's up ahead, I couldn't resist the temptation to catch the 928's so I ramped it up and caught the first one pretty easy. He was on a radio talking to the cars ahead.. I think he was a little surprised by us.. The second car put up a little fight, but I pulled him on the last uphill straight and got by at about 6200 rpm in fifth... The third car played dead and we passed him in short order before the summit of the pass... TOO MUCH Fun.. They came after us on the downhill, but I took a quick exit to run my favorite two lane back into town.

I know, Not PC of me.. Not the safest thing I've done lately.. But, to see their faces when a little old 2.0s passed them uphill, as the add says, it was priceless...

Not sure what year 928 they were but generally speaking an '87 and later 928 S4 or GTS will take a 2.0 S if they were trying (auto or manual). I have both an 71T with a 2.7RS spec motor and a '90 928 S4 (stock) and I can say that the 928 is faster in almost every driving situation. I am sure I will upset some people here but it is just a fact. When new, the S4 was only tenths slower than the 911 turbo and that is because Porsche detuned the car to keep the 911 in the prime performance position. It is easy to achieve over 340rwhp from the stock 5L engine with an x pipe and ecu tuning.

I love my early car and drive it like it was meant to be driven. I generally drive in it alone for the visceral experience and for the 'on the edge' nature of the handling. The car scares most people who ride in it because there is so much feedback and audible pleasure.

But if I really want to go fast without much fuss (with climate control, great tunes, trip computer, airbags, smooth suspension, neutral handling, luggage space, passengers) and in luxury, I take the 928. I can go on drives, take the family (wife and child), keep up with any other road legal car, and do it without all the drama of the early car. Roll down the windows and hear the V8 roar. There is simply no other Porsche like it.

Next time you are in the Denver area we can take a little trip up Golden Gate canyon and have a rematch

Except for the Cayenne and Panamera ...

All joking aside, though, the 928GTS is a pretty mean machine. I have to say I'd rather have one of those than the aforementioned Cayenne or Panamera.
