Paint tag shows:
Basic paint, mfg, type of paint. I can't read the stamping in the image, but if you write it out we will tell you exactly.

I'll be putting together a thread vsry shortly on paint codes. 018 is tangerine as is 23 but the 018 is the primary color number while 23 is the code used on cars only for 1970 & 1971. However, the people that prepare COA's at PCNA must find the 23 code in the records, so that is what they tell you on the COA. Technically, it is only correct for 70 & 71. 018-9-2 is Tangerine-Porsche-Glasurit
So 9 = Porsche manufacturing facility, and 8 = ??? only known on the RS cars
1 = Lesonal paint
3 = Herberts paint

Raj,
That is interesting that your RS has a '9' in the middle sequence of #s on the paint tag. As Dave says most '73 Carreras have an '8' as the middle #. Here is 451.
BTW 2323 is the paint code for a Blutorange coupe (2310 is for a Targa) and 018 is the color code. As Dave says, the 4 digit paint code was used in '70-71, for '72 Porsche changed to using the three digit color code on the paint tag.

The 5 digit codes are for Lesonal custom paints.

The 40 prefix puts me into uncharted territory. The prefix is generally a process or paint line (eg: 97 is the high temperature baking), and the suffix is the paint manufacturer. There were very few with color-to-sample, and little documentaion. Even the Lesonal special colors are rare enough.

That dark blue metallic car is a RS prototype painted with a special blue metallic that was never offered to the public. It is mentioned in the CarreraRS book and in a 911/Porsche world magazine about 5 years ago. Therefore it is good reason the paint code can not be figured out. here's the color tag on the mcqeen car,invoice calls it paint to sample
The code is 6801 but I cannot tell if it is followed by anything. A nice closeup shot would be perfect. Especially for such an unusual tag, it should be well documented. Thanks so much Frank.
