Is there any correlation with the number stamped under the knee pad on a 911 that corresponds to the designated VIN # ? Would this # be transscribed on any "official" Porsche documents here or in Germany ?

It seems that up to the end of the 1698 model year the number on the dash was the VIN. From the 1969 model year it was a coded production number:
    for a 1969 911 you might have 109xxxx.
    first digit
    1 seems to be constant
    second digit
0 stands for Porsche built coupe
1 stands for Porsche built targa
2 stands for Karmann built coupe
3 stands for Karmann built 914/6 beginning in 1970
    third digit
9 stands for 1969 and so on
    last digits
xxxx is the consecutive production number from the bodyshop.
There was no coding for T, E, or S for the 911 at this point.
The factory does not tell you this number, but will confirm if the VIN matches it in their records.

On my 73S the number stamped on the knee rail was also written on the metal dash under the dash pad in yellow crayon so it could be read from the drivers side by the gas filler. gordon

Does anyone have the production # from a 1969 912?
