    The Economy & Early 911's

Judging from the sales action here - or lack thereof - of both cars and higher priced parts, it appears that many early Porsche enthusiasts have been negatively impacted by the economic downturn. What has been really striking to me is the rare parts that were snapped up rapidly a year or two are going begging and sellers come back with reduced price bumps.

I thought it would be interesting to run a poll to get an idea on just how severely we're being affected. The poll is completely anonymous so you can be candid. And you don't have to post any remarks - you can just vote.

    Cheers,

I think the prices have become alot more realistic. Also the board in general has seemed to have calmed down, maybe cause the market has pushed all the quick buck flippers onto other things.

    Are all prices really lower?

Would it be fair to say that the really "nos" parts or rare cars have not really lowered in value?

What suffers the most, it seems, is the middle and lower market which can no longer sustain (or justify) the price increases of the last few years.

At the Toy & Lit. show this year, I seem to remember a "nos" roof rack selling within the first hour or so for quite a lot of money.

As an example, a genuine pair of Recaro seats with matching sliders and original patinated vinyl or leather is likely to find a buyer even today for a huge sum.

But a rusted pair without sliders that need to be recovered completely and advertised at 4.500 or even 5.000 dollars might not be sold for quite some time.

The same goes for the cars I think: a friend is currently looking to purchase a 1972 2.4S but specifically told me that he prefers to spend a "2007/2008" price for a matching numbers, excellent condition example, than compromise on something perhaps a lot cheaper, but not as original.

I thought it would be easy to find one in Europe, especially with a generous budget in the current climate, but was amazed to realize that actually there is almost nothing currently available on the market.

I see that NOS and rare parts are growing up fast this year!

And also that it's very hard to find this type of items....

I've seen little evidence of any meaningful change in early 911 prices. Of course, it is difficult to compare prices on cars that have changed hands when you only see pictures and read written descriptions. The collector car price guides have shown no meaningful change in values.

I am looking for another early car and feel this is a good time to buy one. I would not offer anything of value FS in this current economy.

It is obvious to me that the market for used late model Porsche vehicles has taken a big hit. In the first time in my memory, Porsche is offering deals on new cars.

Oddly enough, that is true. I'm still close to the 356 world and there seems to be very little in the way of price drops there. Who would have ever thought - 356's as a hedge?

    Smile 356 Prices

I disagree with the statement that very little has changed in the 356 market. Of course the very high end cars haven't changed a great deal but it is taking much longer to sell these. Speedsters and Roadster have taken a severe (20% to 30% hit), I negotiated the sale of a complete, most metal work completed, in generally very good condition, project Roadster for $50,000. This car would have sold for $75,000 at the market high, and another Roadster, restored very nicely, but with a few problems (disk brakes) sold for $85,000 and this one would have fetched at least $125,000 previously. Presently, there are many C and SC coupes available at equally discounted prices, i.e. a 1965 SC original paint, one owner, all matching numbers, in very good condition presently for sale at $33,000 with no buyer yet, this would have sold for at least $50,000 last year.

    Keep the faith.

I defer to Tom - he's a lot more involved in buying and selling than I am. Maybe I will get a chance to replace my S90 Roadster that I still regret selling a couple of years ago.
