    68 engine number questions

The original engine number in my 68 was 3380028 and it was a 901/17 but I'm not sure if it was aluminum or mag.

    I have a spare engine 3380373 901/17. It is a mag case.

Approximately how much time passed between those two numbers?

    Thanks!

    Hi Mike,

Porsche made about 7,000 911s in 1968, first order ~20/day. Roughly estimating for the difference of ~350 engines, I'd say a couple weeks plus or minus. Of course there are all kinds of other factors, S versus normal, possibe holidays, etc. but this should get you pretty close. Your original engine was Alu and the later one is Magnesium; the numbers in the chart below show the last alu. engine numbers. Probably when your car was converted from a Sporto, they took out the engine/tranny and put in the manual tranny with its attached engine. Do you know if the engine/tranny numbers in your car now, more or less, match by date code?

    Late 67

    Hello Allen:

There are 10 dots around 67.

Does this indicate a foundry date of October 1967?

    Sequence number is 11773.

    Hi Tom,

Yes, when it was cast. Machining into a completed case followed, I'm guessing, my a couple weeks.

based on the build #'s 3380028 would be after 10500 and 3380373 would be before 16000, so possibly 4000 to 5000 engines built between them so I'd estimate 30 weeks between them.

I looked at sporto data only and I think Dave is right. The last /17 engine in the series was 3380463, so there were only 463 U.S. spec. sporto engines made in '68. 30 weeks is a good estimate. But Mike, you can help with your question, what is the date stamp on your spare engine? Thanks.

I'll get pics and more info from both of my engines and I'll post it up on the Pelican thread in the next day or two, so my data can be added to the database.
