The New ESSES and Good Memories

As I opened the new Esses I gravitated to the "The White Car" story...as I read, I thought, I knew that car! It was about 38 years ago...Wow. It was when Russ Lanthorne owned it. He treaded that car like it was his baby! And then the story brought back memories of Bill Bartee telling me he had purchased it. I knew Bill as a close friend, he would become my "Best Man" in my wedding years later. And then memories fade as they so often do.

What I did not know, was that Russ Sr. had owned the SOCAL Coupe and ran it at Bonneville, that's very cool.

Thank you guys for bringing back those great memories in the Esses...what a cool group of guys!

    John

    PS.
What the story did not tell, was that Fred Davies the original owner of the "S" also owned a white 906 for a few years.

    hi John,
thanks for your note ... what a thrill it was to be given the opportunity to write for the "esses": and such a stunningly beautiful issue it is! i love Robert Tilton's designs & photographs and the writing has been very enjoyable to read.

i was at "easy" in the spring when i mentioned to Robert Tilton that i had researched the history of the car and started writing it down into a historical document which turned out to be about ten pages long ... Bob encouraged me to put a shortened version together with photos. id love to hear more if you're interested in sharing ...

    cheers,
    gary

Hi Gary, I enjoyed the story as well.

I bought a set of Dunlop 500L-15's from Joey Bautista to put on my mag Americans, but they seemed a bit narrow. Yours looks great with the staggered sizes. Can we see some more photos of the car with the cool tires on it?

Yes; more, more. I'm knocked out by that car. The wheels were a heavy body blow which staggered me and those tires, an uppercut to the jaw that put me to the canvas.
