Thread: From 911RS to 911ST

    From 911RS to 911ST

Recently a customer of ours decided to sell his 1972 911T that we had made into an RS Clone for him a few years back.

When we first met the car it was a matching numbers factory-black car with bad paint, dealer-installed A/C, an American sunroof and it didn't run. It was a solid car that the owner wanted to make into an RS-style street sweeper .. and he wanted it done quickly.

The original motor was made into a 2.9L twin-plugger with Webber carburetors. A late-model 915 gearbox was installed with an electric speedo 7:31 ring and pinion, ZF LSD and close ratio gears. The suspension was rebuilt and rebushed, the car got a set of late-model Carrera flares and fiberglass bumpers and the whole thing was bathed in a fresh coat of silver paint. A quickie lightweight-themed interior was installed along with a set of modified late-model sport seats.

Over the next 3 years the car went, MAYBE, 3000 miles.

Recently it was purchased by a fellow in England who has enlisted us to make it look as good as it goes. The new owner has opted for an ST-style car and the transformation from 911RS to 911ST has begun.

You can follow along here, but the entire project is being documented on our website: 911RS to 911ST

Is there a way to skip to the latest photo without clicking through all 45? I would like to be able to check updates quickly.

Thanks for posting the project. Can you tell us a bit about the sunroof delete? Will the new panel be butt welded to the surrounding roof or lapped in some way?

Max - No, not currently. There was a way but it didn't work properly so it was deleted temporarily.

Scott - Absolutely no lapping ... The photo record will show the process of installing a perfect-fit patch as the process develops. The bodywork is being done by John Esposito.

    Hi All,

I am the new owner, a little new to posting on forums and have recently joined this great BB.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts as the build progresses.

    Door Check Repair

Here're a few photos of the door check repair on the driver's side.

As you may know, when the door check goes bad it strains and bends the inner structure of the door. After too much of that the inner structure eventually fails and then the door swings wide and bends the hinge area causing a piss-poor fit along the leading edge where the door meets the fender.

These are the original doors for the car and it was important to keep them with the car.

Wow, seeing the restored piece in person I never could have imagined that the metal was torn that badly.

    Great work
