Thread: Painting Martini Hood

    Painting Martini Hood

While the build goes on of my tribute to the Martini RSR Targa Florio Prototype car 107, thought I'd share repainting
the hood. I'd never been happy with the Martini paintwork on the hood, it had been done quickly to get it ready for
Silverstone 2 years ago soon after bringing the car in from Gib in Arizona.

Comparing it with period pictures the new scheme was to square and boxy, the lines were to straight and the spacing
was wrong. Here's a couple of examples which when you look at the original car and then mine at Silverstone you see
how the original was much more curvaceous and shapely. The stripes gone from the roof now as well!

At the same time I wanted to put in a 'werks' style fuel filler flap which sits proud on top of the hole in the bonnet. I'd
recently found a fantastic paint shop who specialise in custom paint jobs on bikes. I mentioned the bonnet and they
said they would try it working just from the period pictures. Here's Stuart planning out the design.

and here it is after a first quick lacquer coat to see what it looks like. It will be flatted again and we have to tweek the
white and fit up the flap, but I'm really pleased. It's now got the sweeping curves and graduation of the lines I was
looking for. The painting of the Martini and Porsche scripts make it really special, Stuart was really pleased with the
way the ends of the Porsche word meet the stripes, fantastic.

The wide angle distorts it a bit here, but I just love the picture!

If you need a cure for insomnia the the build is documented on DDK at:

    Mike:

    Great work on that lid!

Do you have a pic with the flap to cover the filler hole?

ps: just finished reading the great thread on DDK. Recommeded reading for Christmas break.

Nice job Mike. What was mostly lacking on your first attempt and what the original design had, were nice contrasting "thicks and thins" built into the design, similar to what typography designers design into most fonts. It really gives a sophisticated look.

I may have that exact Euro newspaper page caught in the cooler mesh for you when done!

As an artist, I say: Beautiful and excellent work! Great match of lines and color.

Hugh, Ed, Longbella, Gris and Mark, thanks for the kind words and support, the encouragement means a lot as sometimes you question what you are doing,
but i know it will be worth it in the end!

To Flunder, the filler flap is 'under discussion' at the moment as the painters what to do a wonderful professional flush fitting lid with a hidden hinge,
and of course the factory version is just a plate with sits on top with a crude hinge you can see. It has to be the crude version........

and Steve, already got the number for the archive dept of 'Giornale Di Sicilia' to get the copy for that morning!
