Thread: Luggage Deposit

    Luggage Deposit

This has been a project that I have been building 'in my mind' for some time. I've seen the Porsche Luggage Deposit option in a few cars, and since I removed the rear seats entirely when I re-did my interior last year, I've been itching to build one. I had thought of going the route of buying one from Appbiz, but the cost and shipping turned me off.

Then I read an old thread some months ago by Ray Crawford, whose car has always been a bit of an inspiration for my own build. He built several of these, and even went so far as to offer un-upholstered ones to willing buyers. I figured since Ray had taken the initiative so would I.

Since I am building mine from scratch, I've taken a few liberties with it, although like many other things on my backdate, at first glance it will look stock. I'm just planning to make it more functional, and upgrade the finish materials. So without further delay, here are some pictures (sorry for the quality, they're from my iPhone)...

I'm primarily using Birch as the wood of choice, although I am switching where possible for either weight or strength needs.

Now here's where I depart a bit from the norm. The front doors on the Luggage Deposit are for me pointless for gaining access to the storage.

So I'm adding a hinged lid which will be carpeted and will look like the top of a standard LD, the fact it opens won't be something you can tell from looking at it.

Lastly (for now) I'm adding locks to the front bin doors instead of push buttons. The hinged top will have a catch on the inside as well so that I can lock the top from inside the drivers bin, and then lock the bin door for a nice, secure storage area.

Heresy? I hope not. More to come later this week as I finish the woodwork and then move on to the upholstery.

    Cheers,
    -Mike

    Thumbs up well thought

I like the modifications/ your own input, I like it better than the original and am not hang up to original since my goal is using it in my 912.

Do you have measurements/ a blue print which you are willing to share?

    Thanks Guys,

I don't have a blueprint, as I'm building and fitting it 'as I go'. I would be happy to take any measurements and/or explain anything I've done.

Nice work. How are you going to attach it to the car...or does it just sit in there?

The originals were held in with a bracket that mounts to the seat mounting points, so I'll have to address that soon. I've also got a few nice details that are going to show up later in the process.

    Thanks for the compliments.
