Adventure/Gathering - St Patricks Porsche Day @ McSorleys

John Cramer has proposed a get together, on Tuesday, March 30th, at McSorleys Ale House (www.mcsorleysnewyork.com)
    15 East 7th Street
    New York, NY 10003-8001
    (212) 473-9148

    The time is 6h30pm.
Mark Morrissey will be giving a world premiere of his new "steering wheel dance". It is said that it encourages steering wheels to appear magically out of thin air.
Food is available there, and the corned beef is quite tasty as is the burger. But you don't go for food ;-)

As we are exiting a crisis/recession, it seems only fair to herald Flann O'Briens call to arms ... and give you another reason to join the fun ...

    The Workman's Friend

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When money’s tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A pint of plain is your only man.

    Sounds fun.

Is this open to all, and if so, what's the proposed method of arrival (train, Porsche or DD)?

Open to all Mike. East 7th street, and drinking some beers, so I will be train-ing it, myself.

Public transportation for sure. . . it's a SALOON for heavens sake!

Take the 6 to Astor Place.

Number 15 East Seventh, between Second and Third. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise, it's been there since 1855. (That is before most of you were born)

Mark, I see you list a phone number. Don't even bother, I think it's the number of the pay phone? What are you going to ask them, "Do you serve beer?" Are you still open after 155 years? Hell, McSorleys ran wide open during PROHIBITION, they are certainly serving their "rich, wax-colored ale" on a Tuesday night.

The good news is that the place will hopefully be devoid of checkered shirt-fraternity-backwards-baseball-hat types, German Tourists resplendent with magnificent tresses of long hair trying to candlestick three beers at a time, who get sore at you if you call them "Fabio," Times Square tourists in screen printed sweat shirts and fanny packs asking where is the Bud Light-- just the regular menu of human flotsam, perched temporarily high and dry next to the pot bellied stove until the next wave of humanity surges through the shutters and washes them back to anonymity.

That place does have a tendency to turn ones thoughts to the human condition.....and prose to poetry.

John, you've hit on the precise reason why we insist on meeting there-- it is because McSorley's is a great leveler-- where the humblest is the peer of the most powerful, and neither gets a seat in the back without taking care of the staff. The age and timelessness of the place is a not-so-subtle reminder that we are merely custodians of McSorleys, where the worst of our troubles is at best, a temporary condition.
