'68 'S' Targa: Opinions on Valuation:

I need some help providing an estimate of the value of a vehicle.

    Here are the details:

    1968 911 S
    Soft-window Targa
    Numbers matching per CoA
Recent complete restoration (original floors and panels)
Polo red exterior, black leatherette/hounds tooth interior
    Options: Webasto heater, Blaupunkt Frankfurt
Vehicle is located in the US.

At the Owner's request, I've deleted the attachments with pictures.

I'd like to hear what the Readership has to say about the following:

    1) What do you think this vehicle is worth? ---- the usual
    2) What is the highest price that you know to have been paid for such a vehicle?
    3) What's the most you would pay for this vehicle? (Say, at an auction --- money's no object . . . . and you've had too many beers!)

This is a rare car. And the '68 'S' wasn't even imported to the US. Any comments are appreciated, but keep in mind I'm interested in numbers --- dollars, euros, whatever . What I'm especially hoping for are some thoughtful responses from those of you who either have experience with, first-hand knowledge of, or currently possess such a beastie.

    Thank you.

    Hi guys

I have a 68 S Targa as well. I have been tracking them for a while now. So here are some info. Over 67 and 68 the factory made 925 Targa S cars. 69 it went to 2.2 and MFI so there is only 925 made. This is less than a Carrera RS.
In europe it seems that a soft window is valued more than a glass window just because its different. The highest prices that I have seen was a ground up rebuild in the UK at www.export56.co.uk at 60 000 Pounds and then I have seen another ground up at www.Freisinger-motorsport.com for 65000 euros (I think). But note these are very high prices and the car at export56 took a year to sell and probably didint go for advertised price.

    Wink Very nice...

Seems like a very nice car. I would also support a "high" price of Euros 55.000/60.000.

I think one must be careful with the "rarity" factor based on numbers produced (compared to the Carrera RS)....They probably made very few 911L Targa Sportomatic in 1968 but it doesn't mean they are worth more....

... and even fewer S Targa Sportos. But as Milou wisely points out, no one should expect greater demand for these cars simply because so few were produced.
I certainly don't and I own one. A strong Euro helps for now, and there's more interest on the continent but currently, €50-60,000 for #2 or better is market high.

Just to chime in on the 'rarity' point, does anyone else smile when a seller makes it a point of mentioning when in the production line a car was built as if it was a huge selling point?

i.e.: "This was the 40th to last car made in 1971...."

FWIW, that's a very nice car you've got there.

    Privacy

At the Owner's request, I've deleted material that contains photos of the vehicle. Since it's not currently for sale, and not posted on any other public forum, I had no choice but to take the pictures down, out of respect for the Owner's wishes for privacy.

I'm not familiar with short wheel-base cars, or soft-window Targas, so I really appreciate everybody's input --- like Peter's eBay price history, as well as the links and opinions. The range of values and information underlines how difficult it is to evaluate something that can't be seen or touched. Or driven.

As the owner of the car, I hired a company to do an insurance appraisal for me, needless to say I wasn't very happy when I saw pictures of my car posted on this board. The car isn't completely finished and the pics were bad. I called the appraiser and had the pics removed.
If you are interested and want to see some pics send me a PM. I had started a thread a few weeks ago asking the same question about value. Seems like some where between 100k-120k. Does that sound about right?

This is kind of like Antiques Roadshow...

For the purposes of insurance, somewhere between $100K - $120K

For the purposes of potential purchase (in current economy), somewhere between $50K - $80K

    IMHO
