    Audi Trans Am Quattro . . .

    . . . . ex-Hurley Haywood:

    http://www.autocollections.com/index...=car,year&sr=3

Audi went Trans Am racing back in the late 80s. With Stuck, Rohrl and Haywood driving. (Sounds like bringing a SEAL team to a pinata party.) Rebuffed by the SCCA at first because the Audi 200s they wanted to enter were 4-door sedans, Bob Tulius' Group 44 welded the back doors shut . . . then won 8 out of 13 races and the championship (including a race-for-the-ages at the season finale at Road Atlanta. I think Stuck and Haywood lapped the field --- in the rain.) For all the pony-car pilots drowning that day, it must've been like having your hair cut with a chainsaw!

After that pasting, SCCA banned 4-wheel drive and furrin-built motors from the series. (Dontcha just love competion? 'Uh no --- no we don't. Now please leave our nice Corvettes and Mustangs alone.')

This is Haywood's car. Got rain?

Saw the opener at Miami when Audi moved to GTO with these cars. Even though they broke, you knew what the season was gonna be like.
Looked specifically for the TransAm footage, but Secrets of Speed contains some of it. Here's #3, with links for the rest.

I remember watching the GTO versions run at Mid-Ohio. They could drive those cars anywhere they wanted on track, I'll never forget that.

Great footage. Passing --- hell, BLOWING BY --- on the outside of a corner, dry . . . or wet. Criminy.

I haven't watched all of the footage, yet, but I seem to remember reading that the SCCA tried to slow the Audis down by making them carry extra ballast . . and it ended-up being something outrageous, too --- like, 300-400 lbs?

All the Audi Engineers did was pack the weight all around the chassis . . . to balance out the car better!

I remember fondly watching those cars and thinking how awesome they were. Pissed me off that the rules makers put a wet blanket on the party after only a short lived success story. They were some of my favorite to watch. Also, Audi was successful in the European Touring Car Championship (saloon cars) in the early 90's. I wonder what happened to all those racing saloon cars.

That Trans Am Quattro has to be big $$$$$. Be fun to drive in anger though...

Who can forget the image of Stuck, helmet off, hanging out of the window, pumping his fist and laughing like a maniac after he had won the championship? One of the greatest displays of unbridled enthusiasm that I've seen. How can you not like Hans Stuck?

His description of the sensor " on a certain place of your body, behind yourself - you know what I mean" that lets him feel what the car is doing, was pretty damn funny.
