    turn signal relay...

My 66 has the turnsignals illuminated, but not flashing. I can read the wiring diagrams well...and see the relay in the wiring "path". But, the diagrams don't show where on the chassis the relays are located. And am I correct in thinking that one relay governs all four corners? Is the default if a relay goes bad for the flashing to result in a steady vs intermitant voltage? Or...do the turnsignals not work...period? If anyone has a visual of location and a pic of the relay, I would appreciate the help.

Are you ready for this. . . there are THREE relays.

One is the "control light unit", the round can made by Stribel.
One is the "control light relay" The orange relay with only four terminals.
One is the "blink light unit." This is up in the trunk next to the fuse box.

If your signals aren't flashing when you hit the stalk switch, the first place to begin is with the blink light unit up in the trunk. Change that out with a three-terminal EL13 flasher, available anywhere.

The old SWB system is very hard to understand. Unlike the SWB cars, which use a simpler system with a single flasher unit for the hazards and the signals, the SWB uses two systems, which alternate using the "control light relay." This is a normally-closed relay that sends current to the blink light unit during normal operation, but when the hazard switch is pulled, the control light relay energizes, cutting off power to the blink light unit and energizing the control light relay.

Clear as mud? Let me know how I can help.

    Blink Light Unit

Thanks John. Can you show a picture of the orientation of the unit with respect to the fuse panel? That area has been modified on my car as I engineered adding H1s and the associated relays.

thats what I thought it was...

Thanks. Unless there is an easy way to check the relay...better to just replace it?

    I should have figured...

I engaged the blinker switch and with the relay (blink light unit) in place and I has lights, but no blinking. I pulled the relay and no change, lights but no blinking. I then noted that the relay was manufactured by Lucas...ah ha!
    New relay needed.

Why do the British drink warm beer?

    They have Lucas refrigerators.

    One down...two to go.

Blink light unit...I replaced the three prong unit with first a used one (no change) and now a new one...still no change. So I guess my next option is to go after the units above the pedal cluster...the control light unit and the control light relay. First I will check the blades to make sure the connections are clean. Rather than just replacing the items...is there a simple way to bench test them? Which is the one that physically creates the "clicking" for the blink? I'm beginning to think that turn signals are over-rated

The clicking for the blink comes from the blink light unit, the one you replaced. If your signals aren't blinking, but are illuminated, then for whatever reason either the blink light unit is incorrect, it's defective, or power isn't getting to it.

The signals are in series with the blink light unit-- power comes from the control light relay terminal 87A (the normally closed one) and goes through the blink light unit, back to the stalk switch, out to the signal and to ground.

Check the wires first then report back here. Good luck!

I'm having this exact problem. My blinkers recently started lighting up solid but not blinking. It's a '66 without hazards. I have changed the blink light unit twice (once with a 550 and once an EL13 flasher) and that does not seem to be the problem. Indicator light is also not lighting up in the dash gauge. I'm not great with electronics. Any thoughts before I start digging in?
