    911R Brakes

Any idea what brakes were used on the 911R. I have read some posts saying 67 S iron calipers and another that says 906 calipers. Any consensus?

    Thanks,

I looked in both Fere and Anderson's books but cannot find a clear statement as to the type of brakes on the 911R. My thinking is that at least the prototypes and probably all of the 911Rs would have had Aluminum 906 brakes. These were to be full racing cars (like Cupcars) and weight was saved everywhere. They also fitted 906 engines (or even the 916) so the brakes would have to be up to stopping duties.

    911R Brakes

Very interesting question and there seems to be a great deal of confusion.

I have been looking for evidence to prove that some of the Rally prepared 911Rs were fitted with alloy calipers for quite a long time but without success.

2-3 years ago Elevenparts in Switzerland offered a set of 4 Aluminium 911R calipers for sale but I am not sure that these parts were ever fitted to factory built cars.

The 911R Driver's manual shows a picture of a front strut (the one I have is not a great copy) which clearly has a Cast Iron Caliper installed as the bolts which hold the two halves together are visible. (ATE Alloy calipers of this generation where, I think, a monobloc design)

The manual also clearly describes a Dual Circuit Hydraulic System with a normal handbrake.

The 911R Spare Parts list isn't entirely helpful.

In the Braking Section it does suggest that most braking spares can be taken from the 911/911S Parts List particularly with regard to master cylinders etc.

It lists a front ventilated disc with the same Part Number as the 1967 911S.

All the calipers have Part Numbers which are not shown in PET6.0 but they can be found on a Part Number search but show as NLA.

I think this is because the Part Number given includes Ferodo DS11 pads both front and rear.

It is interesting that the front caliper mounting plate has a different Part number to the 911S but again PET 6.0 will find the 911R Part Number.

I believe that this may mean that these part may have changed slightly and have been updated but someone who knowsthe PET better may be able to comment.

The final thought that I have is that the 911R Parts List refers back to the PET for all rear suspension components.

This indicates that the 911R was fitted with standard SWB Banana Arms, hence standard 911S rear calipers.

My conclusion is that production 911Rs - and I realise this is a loose definition - were fitted with 911S Cast Iron Calipers, standard discs and a standard pedal box.

I do also realise I may be wrong

From memory I'm fairly certain that R#3 (the third of the 4 Prototypes) had cast iron F&R calipers with ventilated discs.

My research has also concluded that the 911R had the 1967 911S cast iron caliper set.

Did the 906 use S calipers? I assume not since then the answer to your question would just be measuring the caliper mounting bolt spacing on the strut.
