    Ques. on refitting a 380mm 914 wheel to a 73 911

I am considering swapping my orig steering wheel for a 380mm 914 wheel and had a number of (basic) questions:

    1. Can a std wheel be "built-up" to have a wheel thickness replicating the RS wheels? If so, how is this accomplished?

    2. What mods are required to fit it on the existing hub? Turn signal cancellation ring? Other?

    3. How much would one expect to pay to make the above mods?

    4. To whom should I send it for these mods?

    Thanks!

    Hi Roger,

What 914 wheel do you have? Can you list a part #?

Just so you know the rim of a 914/6-RS wheel is the same diameter as the standard wheel.

Welcome to the board. Yes, you need to learn the search feature and there is a lot of detail. One of the best RS recovering threads were by Cornpanzer. I just searched for his threads and listed them below:

I could not find the post on the canceling ring I wanted, but here is one to help.

There is a shop in or near Charlotte that sells the extended hub and will install it for you if needed, Zuffenhaus

OK, so I wasn't helpful.. geez...

My .02, you'll need the 911 contact pin for the horn as the 914 pin is too long.

    There... I "helped"

My suggestion for recovering is to simply call up Tony at Autobahn interiors and tell him what you need. He may be able to supply the whole deal. As far as a horn button, you can use the hockey puck, or the standard button. If you have Tony do your wheel, tell him you're going to use the hockey puck as he finishes off the leather on the spokes a little differently than if don't tell him that.

    cheers,

    Eric

Thanks so much Olin for the great links and Mark for the encouraging words.

FWIW, I did do a search both here and on Pelican before posting and spent at least 3 hours perusing the threads. Unfortunately, I did not find the awesome links that Olin provided as I was not using the correct terms.

As an ex Chairman of a publicly traded software company I am pretty well versed on the web and have never understood why some forum members take every opportunity to denigrate newbies. It clearly does not help the community or make new members feel welcome.

Lastly, an intro is in order. I have owned at least one 911 continously since 1981. I became a fanatic as a 9 year old when my Dad (a career naval aviator) purchased his 1970 E through a special military purchase program. That car burned in a garage fire when some kids were playing w/ firecrackers on July 4, 1972 and my Dad then purchased the 73T that I still have. I have the orig window sticker, every reg card and every single receipt since Dec 1972 when the car was purchased. I even drove the car to my HS prom in 1979!

Over the years I have been proud to have owned a number of early 911s, a 1- '60 Roadster and an RS America.

Thanks again for the help Olin and Mark!

    ...Roger
