    Front and rear glass removal

Having the car painted this weekend. Plan is for me to take everything I can off, including the front and rear glass (windshield). Have the shop repair two small rust spots near the glass, prep / paint the car then have a new windshield installed by a third party and pay the guy to reinstall the rear glass as well.

The front windshield is fogging on the sides so I want to replace it at this point. The rear is perfect.

What’s the best method for getting the glass out?

Should I be concerned if the glass company doing the install has never done a 73 Porsche before? In other words is there anything unusual about the removal and installation process?

    Many Thanks,

    Chris

    "unusual?" Not really

Run a plastice putty knife around the inner and outter lip of the seal to make sure it is free, squirk/mop some soapy water under the lip of the seal to act as a lube, working from the inside slowly/gradually work the edge of the rubber seal over the lip of the metal edge. Be careful not to apply too much pressure in any one place too soon as this may crack the glass. You will know you have it licked when you feel the glass and seal begin to move outward. Keep working your way around slowly to the very end, the glass and seal should come out as one.

If the seals are relatively new, you will have little trouble getting the galss out. If the seals are very old and hard, you may have to cut away portions of the hard rubber to get the glass out. Go slow.

Do you have the new seals? Be sure to buy NOS rubber for these two areas. I found a considerable difference between NOS seals and aftermarket seals. Teh aftermarket seals were narrow and did not cover well.

    Good luck.

I personally wouldn't use anyone who has not done this (several times) before - the aluminium inserts which fit in the F&R rubber seals are easily bent.

They need to be (carefully) removed after the screen & seal have been taken out then inserted into the new seal after it has been put around the screen but before the whole assembly is refitted to the car.
