Unless your foot was off the brake, that looks like no more than a 7 MPH impact. There are very few cars that wouldn't be totaled in a 30--40 MPH impact.

The rear bumperettes are attached in a way that allows them to deflect a little at the top; more at the bottom. An impact at the top of the bumperettes drives them into the panel supporting the slam panel and can carry into the box sections on either side of the engine. They in turn can 'push in' to the yoke that carries the upper shock mounts. In a vintage unit body car like a 911/912, the impact does not 'crumple progressively' like a newer car. So a rear impact (10 MPH plus) will potentially close the rear door gaps -- momentarily, chipping paint off the rear edges of the doors. This is generally as far forward as it goes, but on a coupe, look for a buckle alongside the end of the driprail on each quarter. When/if you see that, you've crossed into 5 figures.

Update: repair bill is now up to $7100, two new SSI's and a M&K stainless muffler are now part of the deal. Still do not know if unibody is tweaked and how bad....

I do not understand this. A good shop would determine this before anything. Perhaps you should find another shop IMO

Yikes John that red car is munched! That is WAY worse than mine.

Yes, I thought it was kinda odd that they haven't checked my car for straightness yet also. They like to order all the parts before they do that. I trust them, they fix a lot of tweaked 911 racecars and such.

Update: my 68 is not tweaked, unibody checked out ok!

I should have it back in a few weeks.

That is great news Mike, what was the shifting problem?

Ed, the car shifted fine after the hit, it was the starter that stopped working. Shop says it's been working fine now. So may have been a case of heat soak/old starter syndrome.
