The Place . . . . . . . .
The Place . . . . . . . .
Next day --- + not-so early, this time . . .
. . . and the only thing that could tear me away from all this? . . .
. . . is this!
Fun chronical Rick. Carmel is a special little place and a great spot to base for The Week.. The Cypress Inn is a great boutique hotel that my wife and I stayed at in 2010 for the Historics. Wasn't too bad at $325/nt, but that could be different today. Quaint place with a nice bar - restaurant (good food) and well appointed rooms. When we go back, that is where we will stay.

Headed for Pacific Grove, next . . .
Even though Marco's not too fond of it --- I've been using the Faktory's starting procedure for a while now. Works great ---- + really makes for a quick get-away . . . especially when 1059's butt is right up-against our host's housey
Cold-start = . . . .
1) Key the fuel pump + wait for a 5-count
2) Listen for a 'gurgle' . . . which I think is the sound of air being purged from the fuel-return line? --- telling me that the fuel-circuit's charged
3) Pull the hand-throttle all the way up --- + keep my hand on it
4) Key the starter
Motor turns 3-or-4 times, then lights. Just as it 'catches' . . .
5) . . . push-down the hand-throttle --- usually to ~25% of its travel
I know-I know --- not exactly fond of 'dry-firing' a 44-year-old motor, myself. But --- as kooky as this sounds? . . . it works perfectly, for me + 1059. I've got the whole process down to where the motor comes-on right ~12-1500 RpM . . . no screaming Rs, no booming/barking/back-firing --- nothing. S'truth. All the theatrics aside? . . . it sounds/starts just like any other car. No Big
1059's a 'runner' --- so I have one simple/basic expectation from her
Run
Shots are from heading down the hill to'rds The One + Points North. WAY steeper than it looks
Wish I could hear all this, again. Motor's stone-cold + usually, my practice is to let the engine run @~1500 for a minute-or-so . . . to get all her juices going + some heat in the engine --- then push off. But, here? . . . I just wanna get us outta there + leave these not-so-poor people in peace. So? . . . I let gravity do the work
After quickly getting her started + outta the courtyard then out to the street . . . all we have to do is coast down the hill. Still got some hand-throttle, but basically --- we're just being dragged down the hill in 1st @~2500. Car just sounds wonderful, too --- unless you're trying to get some sleep
Boom-snarl-rasp
By the time we get to the bottom/The One --- engine's all settled. So, I push down the hand-throttle = ~10% + motor on. Next light-or-so --- hand-throttle down = 0%

Oh-yeah --- Pacific Grove
Zovig + I had gone there for a little 'get-away,' last year, + so wanted to see some more
'Nother neat little town --- w/ Old Time store fronts populated w/ an assortment of knick-knackers, antique shops, even grocers. Little-less spendy (maybe) than Carmel but just as charming, I think. 'Touristy'? Heck-yeah . . . but that's why we came here. Seriously. If we wanted 'industry' or 'shopping mall,' we'd 've stayed home + watched the Travel Channel . . . but then? . . .
. . . we couldn't 've driven The Nasty Car as much/far
And at least there 're no Golden Arches
Anyway, even though it's August, the weather's pretty cool --- which I like. Fewer trees, too --- + right by the Pacific = clouds/fog. And any little breeze off the ocean can still be down-right chilly. Then again --- as soon as the sun comes out? . . . you know its Summer. Kinda hard to dress for
1) The hills continue
2) This for you, Tom --- Jameson's . . . ever heard of 'em? Really cool BMW-cum-Sidecar --- w/ a knock-off wheel, yet . . . + very-bashed-in nose
3) Again, not a big town. Business district is probably not much bigger than Carmel-by-the-Sea's = easy to get around on foot. No pictures but double-row parking 's available down the middle of the one main street. Homes fill up the surrounding area + all the last few blocks right by the water, especially further West
Saturday AM. Place looked/felt emptied-out. Not complaining. Found out that some Big Car-a-paloozah had gone on the day-or-so before . . . + had left some of the (older) locals a bit tweaked
4) Man + car + dog. Vintage Mini Clubman?
5) House reminds me of a Friend who'd spent some time restoring Old SF homes. He'd 've added an orange pin-stripe, in there, somewhere. Brave to put so much wood so close to salty water

More Pacific Grove . . .
Living small
Really nice/quiet/relaxing/little Sea Town
1) The Strand @Pacific Grove
I'm sure the weather +time-o'-day had something to do with it . . . but it sure was nice to kinda have the place to ourselves. Monterey 's in the distance
2) Harbor Seals --- aka 'Sea-loaders'
A LOT o' these Jokers around --- most were lolled-up on all the different rocks scattered about . . . both on the shore + further out. Wouldn't 've even noticed 'em --- 'till they moved. Which wasn't often/much. From the size of this one --- doesn't look like he's missed too many meals. There was this kelp bed off-shore --- may 2-300 yards across. Walking there on the path, we'd heard these odd/loud slapping sounds, coming out from the middle of all that kelp --- back flippers smacking the water. Seals, it turns out . . . but no idea what they were up to
3) Diamond plate + chrome wheels + personal plate = Outlaw ZEV
Gak!
And --- of course . . . it's a pick-up. Only in America
4) + 5) Why I keep a camera w/ me
Neat little shrubbery. But --- if I didn't take these pics? . . . . how would I ever explain that I was looking for this to the Guy at Armstrong?
Some parting shots of Pacific Grove . . .
1) Had to check-out some of the Real Estate for sale. Found this sweet little housey. 3 Br, 3 Ba, ~2000 sq ft --- 2 stories/kinda of a split-level thing going on. Whole house very-professionally done in earthy yellows + greens, w/ wood floors, granite + natural stone. Lotsa light. Even had two private (from each other) patios opening to a beautiful manicured back-yard, veggies draping the walls, pots + plants + pavers + chairs. Front yard done in dry-scape --- stone, coupla bushes --- no front yard-work per se . . except to maybe hose down the drive. One Really Big View-killing Tree. 3rd-row of homes from the strand. Niiiiice . . .
. . . except for the 1-car garage
. . . $1.8m
2) 'Nother domicile. Traffic on two sides + notta lotta yard, so --- not my favorite location, maybe . . . . but if I had to . . . .
3) Zovig test-potatoing My Kinda Chair . . . came in red + lime green, too
4) Furniture's on my mind. Roughly-finished, solid stuff
5) How 1059 spent most of her week-end. Nasty Taxi duty. Started + ran, go'd + stopped, parked it anywhere . . . . just a car
