918 Porsche Spyder is officially closer to production

    Hot of the Porsche presses:

ATLANTA - July 28, 2010 - In its session today, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light to series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche's board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 3.0 liter/100 km (94.1 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

Curious what the state side price will be, I've read the cost will be 500 euros ($650,000), usually they sell the cars cheaper over here. I spoke with my local dealer, they have firm commitments on their two car allotment.

Personally, I would like to see them build the car without all the hybrid technology priced in the range of a 911 Turbo.

Bah! EMFs, High voltage risks... Petroleum has carcinogenic fumes (aromatic rings/benzoates) and the exhaust emissions are not good. Hydrogen will supposedly go Hindenburg on you at the slightest tap. Battery chemistry is toxic. Everything these days can kill you.

Just use the car properly. Don't crash. You'll be fine.

$640K is what I heard, I assume same car spec worldwide and therefore doubt if they'll do anything re a price difference herein the USA. Might be some CGt's coming up for grabs ....

Car without the hybrid tech like a 911 turbo - maybe that would be a GT2 RS ?

    Nick,

As I see it, Porsche needs to/must build the 918 even if is not a sales success.

With the stringent new mpg. averages that manufacturers will have to achieve across their complete line-up, this model sends Porsches median mpg through the roof and far exceeds the future mpg requirements of Europe and the USA.

Porsche has managed to achieve this goal without sacrificing performance and without having to build a dorky socialist people mover (Prius).

'Porsche to build the 918 Spyder'

    Here comes the future? . . .

    http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/39956/

I guess its gonna be up to Audi to build anything 'sporty' with a diesel --- despite Porsche's history with diesel-electric vehicles. (Germany's 'Panther' and 'Tiger' tanks were diesel-electric. . . as designed by None Other Than)

    Hope it makes money.

Are CAFE figures not based on actual production #'s?

Are you sure the Panzers were diesel-electric? I thought they were plain diesel.

Porsche did invent the "Mixtie drive" gasoline-electric thing way back around the 'teens. Got his honorary doctorate for making a "land train" for the army out of a bunch of electric-motor-in-the-wheel-hub carts with a generator on board.

    Fuel Economy

The consumption figures for Porsche's 918 Spyder are based on 'the New European Driving Cycle,' whatever that is ---- 25 MPH on batteries, maybe?

And I seriously doubt whether Porsche would go through mess (and expense) of emissions and crash testing to ever bring this thing to the US.

But then again . . . look at the Cayenne. I mean if Porsche can make money at it, they'll build tractors --- wuhp! They already did that. Dang!

Blind Pedestrians, high voltage, electormagnetic fields - and all around Lance Armstrong - That's f***ing hillarious. There goes the neighborhood ...

I think, from a design perspective, the prototype simply looks awesome. Can't wait to see how the production model looks like.
