PORSCHE 918 Spyder introduction @ Pebble Beach

Just returned home from a fabulous weekend in Carmel attending the Monterey car weekend, previously known as the Monterey Historics.

Shot over a 1000 photographs, and will eventually post most of the worthy captures, after Dilger has selected those he wants to publish in the next issue of the ESSES, but thought the Registry would be interested and enjoy a peek at the PORSCHE 918 SPYDER, the only existing copy of which had its North American introduction at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday morning.

The crowd was ten deep, the pushing, shoving and pointing of I-phones was a real spectacle to behold, and it's a miracle I got any shots of it at all......but here's what I did manage to capture. Forgive the questionable quality of these shots, as I literally had seconds of clear view to move around the car and didn't take a lot of time to do much post prod. correction.

Great shots John. No more wing mirrors, but wing cameras instead?

Here's the "official" video of the 918 in Monterey. The producers did quite a good job shooting and editing this material to publish on Sunday.

They did a special "invite" reveal at the Monterey Jet Center prior to that. I have a couple of photos from it, but it was actually quite nauseating to see the pandering to the wealthy clientele. I went with my wife and kids, and we were definitely the odd lot out. AFAIK, they never even popped the rear envelope for the engine. The salesguy told me there would have to be many changes prior to production - such as the carbon fiber windshield frame which would never pass DOT inspection.

It's the worst economy globally in 80 years, they are bringing out a technological tour-de-force that has not been exactly cheap to develop, and they are not masters of their own destiny any more, despite all the assurances of autonomy and independence.

Who the Hell if not wealthy clients should they pander to, since they're planning to sell the damned thing for around half a million dollars.

I wasn't objecting to "who" they were target, just "how."

Maybe really, really wealthy car buyers love being sucked up to, but for me it was just uncomfortable. Of course, I am not likely to drop about $700K (I've heard $640K and $770K as possible price points) on a car, so I am not a part of the "who"...

C-GTs have traded from the high 300s to the high 200s...
