Rallye Plate

Has anyone attached a period Rally plate to their car in a non permanent method, that stays in place?

I recently purchased one on ebay that matches my 1968 xxx intl wiesbaden - deutchland rallye grill badge and want to attach it, but not permanently.. mostly for show, but something that will really stick in place, just in case i forget to take it off.

I was thinking of attaching one of these to it..

    Harry....

How about screws? That's what they did in the day. Another thing they did at times was attach the plates by taping around the perimeter. Kind of ugly and i would worry about the tape pulling off the paint.

Just kidding - your post is really timely as I have just obtained an original Tour de France rallye plate that I want to attach (temporarily) to my '67 for an upcoming show. The solutions that you provided a link to look really good actually. Unless others can recommend one over the other I think I might one of each of them to evaluate which might work the best.

    Cheers,

Thanks John! Yeah, i dont want to screw it in (even on my 2nd hood with cibies mounted) and i would be worried about tape.

your car is kind of an inspiration in this regards. i have had the grill badge for a while. i bought it because it was for a rally event, in germany, the year my car was built.

i have always had this faux background story in my head about my car and the sports purpose/r-gruppe influenced build i am doing.. basically it was bought by fritz, a young lufthansa pilot with a playboy lifestyle, who drove and occasionally rallyed on the weekends, and did privateer stuff. he built the car to rallye specs, yet didnt venture too off too far from stock because it still had to be streetable (and because in real life i want my car to be reversible back to stock so the next care taker can do so if they please, in only a weekends worth of work).

anyways, i think you once wrote you had the tulipen rallye plate on your hood because a privateer wouldnt have done the monte. this kind of thought really impressed me, and i never looked at it that way. so in the same vein, i have been on the look out for the plate to match my badge, since 'fritz' would have done some of the lesser rallyes, as you suggested.

i finally found my plate! i had to pass up on some other improvements i was looking to do soon, but i couldnt pass it up since i actually found it.

Glue it to a big sheet of that magnetic material....same stuff as used for auto-x numbers.

    Or better yet....
Get one completely and identically replicated on the magnetic material.

Should have no problem staying on if ya keep it under 100!

I would be worried about this weighing too much. which is why i thought of the big heavy duty dealership license plate magnets

that will probably be done eventually, but i like the idea of having the real thing, especially since teh cibies are replicas, the sports seats will eventually be replicas.. i sold my real amco roof rack for money for a home repair, but plan on eventually replacing it with a replica..

needless to say i have a desire to put a bit more authentic back into it where i can.

    Hi Raj,

Thats pretty much what these were in the link, but they are coated with rubber so as not to scratch.

i was thinking of that attached with some heavy duty double sided tape to the plate.

    Wink Double sided tape

For historic rallying, I've been using double sided tape. It's very strong but doesn't damage the paint when removed (carefully). I found some thick tape that was pretty thick almost foam like. It's advertised to glue things on tiles or painted walls....

I don't use it along the whole edges, mostly in corners usually. It has the advantage of being very strong and prevents the plate from touching/scratching the paint surface:

It's been over 3 years now since I started using it and I've never lost a rally plate on the road and never damaged the paint.

PS: In The Sixties, you were heavily penalized for losing your rally plates, that's why the factory initially used rivets!:

how many plates did each car have back in the 60s? would you have two plates (front and back) or just one plate?

if one, which is more correct, front or back?
