King of the Ring - Stefan Bellof's Record at Nurburgring

Great article in today's Wall Street Journal on Stefan Bellof who died 25 years ago when he clipped Jacky Ickx and lost control of his 956 at Nurburgring. The article focused on the record he set in 1983 when he turned the Ring in a Twin Turbo 956 in 6:11:13, a record that still stands today. No one has even come within 5 seconds of matching it!

Anyway, very interesting article. See it in the Sept. 1 WSJ, page D6.

I think you'll be able to read it here as well

I believe he was killed at Spa not the Nurburgring. He and Ick came together at Eau Rouge.

He had a big off at the Nordschleife but lost his life at Spa. Burned alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgtZe-iQH1U

The Nordschleife was shortened due to construction on the GP circuit entrance when he set the record, to the current length, so Lauda's record pre 1983 still stands for the longer circuit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqFrqLBcCGk

Thanks for the correction, yes, he set the record at Nurburgring but clipped Ickx and died at Spa in Belgium.

No cameras during fast laps. They used big cameras back then. The 'In Car 956' movie has a shot where you see the rig takes up the whole passenger side of the car, not to mention the weight.
