    Q for 915 Gearbox Guru's

there is a lot of information on this board about typ901 and typ911 gearboxes and the special versions of them. however i cant recall ever seeing much about the special versions of the typ 915 gearbox - save a little bit about the variants fitted to the production RS cars.

I have been waiting to ask this question for about a year after seeing the numbering on the gaerbox in the 1972 Monte ST that Leon has - see thread here

the gearbox is numbered 915 033 (see attached pic from the thread) - this can only be a type number as far as I can see - not a serial number a that would a seven number series starting with 7, i have not seen a reference to a type number anything like it , or any competition 915 type numbers for that matter, despite looking for it over the past year or so.

can anyone add any information - it is obviously a special competition box with oil cooler and very short gears.

Is it not the pairing number? Why would the type number be stamped in twice, symmetrical?

    I really dont know

it is a VERY early 915 box though and a very special one. it may be a coincidence to be numbered 915 but i suspect not given the car it is in.

I dont know much about gearbox numbering and even less about what might be stamped on a competition box for a factory rally car so i am really putting it out there to see if anyone knows - if anyone does it is likely to be on this board

I always thought Type Numbers (the number after the "/") were two digit numbers - i.e. 911/XX, 901/XX, or 915/XX).

I agree with the previous statement that the numbers you posted, Hugh, are pairing numbers.

those numbers are stamped on the opposite side of the gearbox. are there any numbers on the bottom where the clutch cable goes thru. I am going to bump gearbox # cannot be traced back as it is a ST trans, maybe some info there. Gordon
