The (2) applies to the 1969 through 1973 VIN.
    Earlier is more complicated.
It was simply to distinguish between a Porsche (Reuter) body and a Karmann body.

While they are basically identical, many feel the Karmann body superior.
I had been told by Factory employees at the time that the Karmann body was built to pass an additional rigorous inspection prior to acceptance for assembly. Karmann didn’t want any ‘returns’ or ‘re-work’ charged to them.

    Best,
    Grady

That's a good question, and a little difficult to answer. The short answer is "not much." There are some differences. There seem to be different approaches to the use of black vs. body colored paint in the trunk at various dates, for instance, and the galvanized floor panels that were used in Reuter built tubs starting in late '70 (I think) were not used in the Karmann chassis (see serial numbers in factory manual). I have heard other claims of weight differences (with the Karmann cars said to be a little lighter) and other unspecified differences. More useful input will hopefully be forthcoming from someone that has owned cars from both suppliers. I have only owned a Karmann example.
