hi Dana, it was 13 driving days out(left on sunday, got to seattle on 2xFriday), including sight-seeing detours. 4 days back(left sunday, got back early thursday).

Travels with Charlie, and Blue Highways by William Least Heat Moon are good cliffnotes, although both focused more off the beaten path and smaller towns. Also had 'Over the hill', by David Lamb, who bicycled DC to LA.

Hoping one of these days I can do a long trip in my car. All the planets will have to align for me. I'm thinking next year's Parade, since it's in Savannah and most of my family is scattered along the NC/SC coast. Without a/c or a front-mounted oil cooler I think it might be rough for both car and driver.
